DSL Speed

I recently moved from where I had a Telkom 10Mbs uncapped DSL package. When I requested a transfer I was told that I should drop to a 4Mbs package as I was further away from the Telkom exchange which I did. When the Telkom guy came to install the physical DSL line (there had been a single line voice in but I needed a separate one to the DSL line) he told me that I should be able to get about 7Mbs. I looked up the formula and based, on what he had told me was the actual 'last mile' distance' not the distance as the crow flies, confirmed his calculation.

Now I have taken a 10Mbs package from OpenWeb whilst still keeping Telkom for the time being but the best speed I am getting is about 3.4Mbs. I got throttled by Telkom because my eldest daughter, who had been staying with me between jobs, didn't think that watching streaming movies 24/7 counted as bandwidth. I did ake me a couple of days to work out that I had been throttled mainly because it took that long to get hold of somebody at Telkom who could tell me why my DSL was so slow.

What I would like to know is because I had the 4Mbs package from Telkom have they set my maximum line speed in the exchange to that and do I need to grit my teeth and find out how to ask them to up it? The cost of the DSL line is the same irrespective of whatever speed you can get out of it I presume.

Incidentally if I use my Vodacom LTE modem, which I use if I travel and can't get WiFi, I can get about 30Mbs but as they don't offer an uncapped package I can't afford o use it at home all the time.

Your account consists of three items:
1. POTS line rental
2. DSL rental
3. ISP data cost

You say you also have a 10Mbps package from Openweb (please folks, no comments on this choice). Does that include (2) + (3) or is it only for the data costs (3) ??

If it is for (3) then you will be pegged to 4Mbps by Telkom as that is the DSL rental that you are paying for.

If it is for (2+3) then you should get better speeds when you use the Openweb account settings in you modem/router.

I think between the two of you, MickeyD and KingRat1 you have answered my question. POTS and DSL are from the Telkom faster package. I always thought the Telkom DSL packages were totally bundled except for the actual line. Having seen your replies I had a good look at the Telkom site to see where the pricing for the DSL speed was and found it. So I do need to upgrade with Telkom. Apart from OpenWeb which is an experiment I also have an account with Axxess which has always been my fallback ISP if I had a problem with Telkom. The line diagnostics that Axxess provides, from their diagnostic interrogation of Telkom, shows that I do have a 10Mbs service with a download speed of 4095, noise level of 24.3 dB and signal to noise of 24dB. The service and download speed do seem to be at odds.

I'm puzzled by what he said above. Surely all the guy did was plug in a line splitter? That's all I did many years ago when I got my ADSL as everything happens at the exchange.

I had, at the previous house, an ISDN line with two multi subscriber numbers and a line for ADSL all of which which I wanted to transfer. The new house only had one physical line hence the need to install another one. I have tried several times to get another physical line installed, drop the ISDN facility which I no longer use, and keep both the multi subscriber numbers. For some reason which nobody at Telkom can explain, although they blame it on a restriction in the exchange, I can't keep the same numbers. This seems quite strange to me as the two numbers were originally two normal voice line numbers and I am still in the same exchange area. I want to keep them a) because they are adjacent numbers eg. ...123 and ...124 and b) because they are on my company letterhead which I have had for donkey's years.
