Hi there

I am just wondering if anyone knows of a DSL modem whereby connection is not via the telephone cable but LAN.

Here is why I ask... I am in this new estate where a DSLAM hub is being installed. Now I am not sure how they will be controlling access. As far as I know, if I say that I want a 4meg connection, I have it... but as fas as I know, I have to go through these peeps. I would like to be able to buy and use multiple accounts and the only reason I ask about this specific modem (if it exists) is because we have fiber optic links to the hub, and no telephone cables. I am making the aasumption that I would need something like this to be able to switch accounts, like one would normally do through their modem...

Anyways, lets just say that at the end of the day I would rather pay for the connection but use someone else for the bandwidth. I am not happy with these people as is so...

If anyone knows of such a modem, any info would be greatly appreciated.

you can either use an ADSL router - they would put their main router into bridge mode and you would connect via your own router.

Or you could create a PPPoE connection on your own computers to connect to your service provider with your username and password....

it's hard to give you advice as the setup you have described at your complex doesn't make sense. You can't have a dslam with fibreoptic cables. There is a conflict in technology. dslams are used to provide a network connection over a standard telephone copper cable. but if i hazard a guess of what the setup probably is then I would assume you actually have an ethernet (lan) connection in your place and then you can either use a "broadband router" to supply internet access to your pc's or you can just use a computer as the router (establishing the pppoe connections and suppling access to the rest of your pcs) plugging its network card directly to the lan port or indirectly using a switch. if i'm correct then you must not purchase an "adsl router" as these normally have an adsl modem hardwired to the router wan port. But you would need to find out if the complex supplies it's own internet or if they give you access to the telkom ipconnect network. if they supply their own bandwidth then you are buggered and have to use them.

Hi there

Ja... I reckon you have it right. It is a case of there are over 2000 units, or will be, in the estate and so Telkom is installing a DSLAM hub for DSL distribution throughout the estate. I have no idea why they didn't just get Telkom to run copper wire so that people like me who like to be in control of my connection, so that we could do as we please but lets just say that it has taken months to get our broadband.

Now this company will be selling bandwidth for use by all, but I am hoping to be able to get the connection and to then be able to buy my own bandwidth. I am not sure what they are using to distribute the connection... but according to the brochure, each unit is linked via fibre optic cable to the central, I don't know... point. I am afraid that I am clueless as to what happens from DSLAM to us. I guess that I will just have to wait and see. I was hoping that they plug us into a modem or something, and that I would be able to bypass them to be able to use my own ISP... I guess that I should ask them how the whole process is going to work... time to start bugging them again :D I think that they really hate me, but in my opinion, it is really stupid to build an estate or any house for that matter, and to not have the option of my own land line, but to be forced to use something that they set up which has been nothing but a problem from day 1.... but anyways :) I am sure that it will be cool.

Shot again man.
