I'm not 100% sure if this is the right place to post this, but becoming a little desperate.

About 10 days ago, we had a massive storm in the area. None of my equipment got damaged, but it appears my actual line is faulty. I have a perfectly adequate Internet connection. I'm paying for a 1Mbps line, and that's what I'm getting. However the voice service is dead. Not even a hint of dial tone. I have logged the fault with Telkom, but I'm doubting they'll get back to me this century. The problem is, I need the voice service. My wife works from home, and makes about 50 calls a day. She is losing serious money at the moment.

What I'm getting at, really, is...

1. Has anyone had this problem before, and know what the cause was, so I can try a self-repair.
2. Any suggestions on where I can look for an issue. I suspect the issue lies with my port at the exchange, but what do I know. It just makes no sense to me that the ADSL portion works no problem, but the voice service is dead. I have taken all devices off the line and used a working basic handset to confirm no dial tone.

Thanks for any (good) help given.

This normally happens when one wire of the two wire pair has become disconnected, believe it or not ADSL can run on only one wire, but POTS needs the pair. Either that or faulty card in the DSLAM.

Aahh, that is useful knowledge. That gives me a clue as to where my problem lies. I have a dodgy joint outside, so maybe it got a knock during the storm. Will look at it this afternoon. Thanks for that

If you can still use adsl then maybe she can use skype to make her calls.

Hi There,
I get it often and it may not be a poor joint at your property.
Place a voice call with Telkom and they will resolve it. Poor joints included.

Regards

Tim

I found my own problem, but I cannot fix.

The line took a direct hit, and the one strand on the pair has literally popped in several places. The cable runs underground from my unit to the main box where the techie hooks up, and the whole cable will need to be replaced. But Telkom don't know this yet, as they still have not even contacted me to send a techie.

The problem is, we had a bit of a wind storm, and a branch knocked the bit of exposed cable outside and it snapped. So know I have nothing. Depressing.

Shot for the info though. Was useful to know

Shot MickeyD.

Had already done so, on the 12th of Feb. Been sitting in the tech repair division for 4 days now, yet still not even a phone call to arrange a visit to my premises. Gatvol. At least here I get some form of valid help.
