Can SKYPE work with a 384 DSL? I presume the 384 means it connects at 384kbps.
I have a problem connecting with EDGE at 921.6kbps with wireless.

Works absolutely perfectly, have been using it for years.
If it im not mistaken when it comes to VOIP latency is a bigger issue then actual speed.

Yeah latency it the main issue, skype used to work perfectly when i had 192 dsl.
Even with high latency you should still be able to connect though, just will be a bit delayed, are you sure its not shaped/blocked?

"EDGE at 921.6kbps"

looks more a factor of 10 too much. Also edge/gprs has a incurred 550ms? on the 1st hop to tower/basestation. ADSL = 20-40ms only probs in ADSL is shaped/unshaped.

skype basically uses a stream of 40kbps up and 40kbps down - thats my experience - i keep my eyes on my DUmeter whilst talking....so as mentioned by the others, its latency thats important and not speed....btw, im using a 384 line and im happy

Thank you for the input. I am thinking of getting DSL384 becouse I live in Simons Town and the south easter wind blows all the wireless signals to Milnerton and then I sit with no internet.
And, yes I am connected at 921.6kbps with EDGE. This shows in my taskbar, but remember that this is the speed that the computer connects to the modem and not the speed of the internet connection as such. My DAP when downloading with 4 connections is about 22kbps compared to GPRS at 3kbps.

I use 384 and Skype works perfectly...Edge is not consistent and latency is bad that's why it doesn't work well.

Tho browsing and talking on Skype is problematic.
