Ive finally decided to get ADSl 384. Dunno if thats a good or bad thing. I just wanted to check before I make the plunge and make sure about a few things.
After the DSL 384 2Gb cap is reached, I will still have local access right?
Also how are they implementing this 2Gb cap? I dont c ISP's offering DSL 384 accounts.
I would phone telkom and ask them this but I just wouldnt trust there answer :p
Any help appreciated

Thanks

Hi Vex

Get the isp to organise everythng for you, did mine through Blackdot (011) 315 5445, ask for Mandy.

Remember the package is 2 pieces, even when talking to Telkom, you have the actual line that has a bandwith filter on it and this is supplied by Telkom, then you have the ISP, and for this you can use either Telkom ISP arm which operates totally independant from the network section or a 3rd party like Blackdot.

BTW, the dsl384 is the same as the 512 package except for the one being 384 down to you compared to 512 (128 up and 256 up)in the other package, IE, it has the same 3GB cap and the same rules when it comes to international usage, ones the cap is reach you don't have internation link but local still functional.

georgezela: do you get a % of blackdot's sales .. you pawn them off in almost every post [;)] ...

Vex: The 384 package is fine ... speed is 384/128 vs 512/256 ...
your effective maximum d/l speed should be 40kb/s on both local & international.. depending on the site you visit ofcourse. The 40kb/s is actually a pretty stable figure. The only time you will see major performance degrade is at the end of the month (last 2-3 days), as everybody is leeching the net before the caps reset ...

You will need an ISP for the ADSL connection ... use www.hellkom.co.za for a list of latest(cheapest) ISPs.

What a lot of people have done is to buy 2 x 3GB accounts ( I did ). This will give you an average d/l of 200MB / day ...

What you could do is wait till your first account runs out and then use that one for local leeching and the new account for your international adventures ...

Oh my word ... people are still confused about this.

People read what follows carefully:

There are two completely distinct issues here: The line rental and the ISP package.

Line rental:
Two options:
512/512k for R680 pm
384/384k for R450 pm

ISP packages:
3 GB package: (R230-330)
Before cap: All traffic counts to cap, full international speeds.
After cap: Unlimited local access, international very slow.
2 GB package:
Before cap: All traffic counts to cap, full international speeds.
After cap: ZERO NADA F-ALL access.

Now here's the thing, you can use ANY line and ANY ISP package in combination.

For example I use the 384k line and two 3 GB packages!

The poll on the front page is totally misleading and should be deleted.

PS: More ISPs will offer the 2 GB package eventually ... its new.

PPS: We need this to go into a sticky.

harth correction:

should read:

3 GB package: (R230-330)
Before cap: All traffic counts to cap, full international speeds.
After cap: Unlimited local access, international ZERO NADA F-ALL access.

Thanks for the reply's. Im about to order it. One more question.
Should I apply online or via the phone, or can I expect the same bad service either way?

Thanks

the 2Gb package is not somthing to concider at all and a 3Gb username will work on a 384kbs line so dont bother with 2Gb get the 3Gb and dont be fooled by there propaganda

Troll [:D]

Nope capped 3 GB package lets you browse int *slowly* ... but no downloads are practical.

The 2 GB package is a true cut off i.e. lights out.

Phone and get an order number and get the persons full name.

That way you can phone the regional manager's office (like I did) and bitch about slow installation etc.

With the online application they have 1001 possible excuses when things go wrong ... work the system [;)]

get the telkoms employee number as well and dont take crap about them not allowed to give it out it is on there staff id cards and is the way you check if the employee is legit.

I recently installed the 384k package at home and don't notice any difference between it and the 512k adsl we have at the office.

In fact the first thing I did was download some random patch from microsoft, which came in at a steady 53.0 KB/sec, a theoretical 424 kbps.

Not bad for a 384k line.

Being a new installation I thought it would be throttled from the start...

Guess I'll just enjoy it while I can then.

It is throtteled .. but you do get BURSTS of data every now and again .. my best one was about 0kb/s on my 384 package ...

Blobnow, i just pawn them when someone ask for a reference or soemthign and the owner is a friend of mine, i also have my line through him and am happy...

i would rather see my money or your money got to him than to Telkom...
