Today a Telcom techie called me and told me that I had been allocated a port on their DSLAM. When I go home, I plugged in my router and was able to browse the telcom website. Than after 4pm I couldn't anymore. Is this normal?

And also, about how long will it take after assignment of a DSLAM port, for the line to be activated and fully functional?

Depends on type of installation, self or techie & what their tests show, before a line is put into use it has to pass/meet line stats for given speed requirement.(this is auto in self-install).

Self install is up and runing within 30min-to-1hr if you have your isp acc ready and line stats was good 1st time round etc. after they phone you to tell you work at exchange is complete.

Techie install is only put in use after the techie comes to visit and you sign off as complete, but then i connected my adsl line and internet access as soon as i notice the slight extra noise you get when connected to the dlsam + my router synch'd, the techie who came to my house was supprised when he saw everything(private router setup + pots filters all installed etc) was done already and all he had to do was get the stats of the line.

Bleh, I had the same problem. Saterday they phoned and said that my line has been activated, but I tried and tried to connect, but with no success. I did the self installation, so I thought that I'm the idiot in the story. But today they phoned and said their is something wrong with the DSLAM sync and "they are attending to the problem"
Boom, headshot!!!

I am doing self-install. What I meant was after the DSLAM stuff is done, how long before the techie does whatever he needs to at the exchange? Am I getting this process right? Just what Telcom have told me so who knows. They also told me that the speed test had been completed.

If its self-install as soon as they phoned you and said its ready, the physical work at exch is complete.

Install/put in place the filters for each phone/fax, join your adsl router to phone line(ie not thru the filter). Assuming its a telkom router(else you need to set up guess acc. settings)

Nxt step is to go to verification site and choose speed you with use.
It will ask you for the line number(phone number) + Order number.

It will run a short test, to see if line is stable, pass/succeed test and then tell you something like your line is now ready for use in 30-45min.

There after you get into your router settings and and change the account info to your own, ie [email protected] + pwd and tada you on the net.

If it fails, this means something is wrong with the line, mebbe noisy, attenuation too much etc anyways in this case you call the help desk and tell them the self-install failed and they must forward the info to relevant people/fault log.

Note this is with the guest account that is auto-set in the router. For help with this process you can always just take phone to pc, and give em a call and they should be able to help you thru the process. Takes 3-7min to do and see if it fails. Uhm can't remember the web address for verification site, but it should be on the papper they give you at the Telkom shop.. else just phone them
