As many know, I bought a bridge camera on the weekend - with the intention of saving and buying a DSL about mid year.

What features (not quality of images) would a DSLR give me extra?

Two I see opp the top of my head is bulb mode/ability to expose for more 15 sec and zoom burst.

Anything else?

Better metering, faster shutter response, superior flash exposure/metering, the viewfinder, the ability to use far better glass, superior auto focus, fast frame rate shooting (if that's your thing), bragging rights...

But that's not new features :P

That's better and superior of what I have. Is that the main thing with dSLR then?

Wasnt that the point of the topic?

Sorry - I can't quote on a phone.

My text in bold was in reply to koffie. I actually want to find out what it can do that a P&S can't. Or is the point that it does everything the same - just better?

Though it was clear :/

I guess you'd need to list all the features your P&S has first so we can see. :)

Very little is new. "Features" rather seem to find their way from consumer compacts to higher end cameras to attract those consumers. Like face detection (iirc the Pentax Kx has it), live view, etc. Most of those "features" are things that make little sense on a DSLR but they get crammed in there anyway. Print button - WTF?

Mostly.

It's a secondary share with quick menu on the 550D and a secondary share with an equally useless RAW/JPG button on the 7D. The buttons are remarkably configurable on the 7D so one might be able to completely remap it anyway.

As for features - I used my 7D to make sure my pool table was level last night :D

It's shared with Live view on the 50D. But seriously, who buys a DSLR, especially a mid-range one, and the plugs it directly into a printer? I guess you could also ask, is there anyone serious enough about photography to buy a mid-range DSLR and to make prints, that actually uses Canon's crappy inkjets?

Awesome!

Ah ok. Identity it gives you like a "tunnel" kinda effect. Not exactly the most awesome feature...

DSLRs don't really have any extra features over p&s superzooms other than being able to change lenses. Everything else is really just better...
One thing I can think of is my D90 can control a remote flash, can't do that on a superzoom but you could use a "dumb" slave flash so again it's really just a better thing, unless you count being able to control flash output etc from the camera as an additional feature.

I wouldn't mind doing a few creative shots one day - hence I like feature and the effect it gives.

I'm also sure it can be done in PS - but that's no fun ;)
