Hi,
I recently upgraded my dlink 655 router to a dlink DSR-1000n. I read a lot of reviews and took a while before i decided to go ahead and buy the DSR-1000n. I have since had nothing but problems with it. I have spoken to their tech support in Sweden who emailed me their latest firmware 1.03B74_WW which seems to be a bit better and faster.
My dlink 655 was rock solid, never gave any problem, easy to configure and use. the only reason for my upgrade was the VPN support, firewall features and speed. which is probably the only thing the DSR-1000n is good at.
It is terribly tricky to configure. ie setting up the dedicated ip address, has to be done "manually" unlink the dir-655 you could select this from a drop down list. same goes for the mac filtering, has to be done manually!
The wifi range is better although you have to manually switch betweeen 2.4ghz and 5ghz, it doesnt broadcast this similtaniously. There is not much difference in speed either (between the dir-655 and dsr-1000n) you only notice the speed when you have more than 3 computers connected to your network. the dir-655 struggled where as the dsr-1000n doent break a sweat.
The main porblem is and i have tried to change all the settings and still does it!!!!!!!!!! the dsr-1000n, without fail!! disconnects me from the internet.
The tech support in Sweden told me to disable the udp flood, this didnt help. nothing else seems to help solve the problem.
oh another problem which the tech support didnt have any answers to was the fact that there is only read only access to the usb storage devices which you can connect to the router. you can find these devices on your network and copy fiiles from them but you cannot write to them. again:mad:
to be perfectly honest, i dont know why i bothered buying this router the disadvatages far out weigh the advantages.
Has any one else experienced similar issues, i would be interested to know your thoughts.
Thanks
Simon

what a review!

I just wanted to upgrade mine 655, but you've STOPPED me just in time!
Nicely written review, although all the reported problems suck!

Please let me know if you manage to fix all the issues (well, the important ones)

It died again on me this evening, i have enabled the logs but they are no use as it must have volitile ram, in other words it only remembers the logs whilst it is on, if you reboot, then it loses all that info.
I before i got this router i actually had the draytek 2830n which had even better reviews. i had it for 3 days before i sent it back, it was even worse, mind you saying that it didnt disconnect me from the internet. The main problem i had was that it throttled my internet bandwidth by 40%. Even after i disabled all the firewall settings etc. The interface was also not very user friendly. I also didnt require the built in modem. So i htough i would just stick with D'Link, spend a but more money and get the DSR-1000n. what a waste of money that was. I find it strange as the DSR-1000 was released last september 2010 and launch/reviewed only a few months ago. The dir-655 was released in 2008 and its almost as though (correct me if i am wrong) but technology, for dlink, has gone backwards.
If i was to "re-live" the last 2 months, i would have chosen either the new cisco E4200 or possibly the dir-855. the new cisco looks good, i havnt tried it. but its a fraction of the price of the dsr-1000n yet seems to have equally as many features, perfoms as well AND can actually broadcast 2.4ghz and 5ghz similtaniously! why do i also think that the more expensive items are better? :(

Just to let everyone know what i have done.
Ok, i put my habds up, thrown in the towel and given up on the dlink dsr-1000n, i sent it back and asked for a refund, yes i know it is a business router and they are not meant to be easy but they are supposed to be the most stable, right?
The DLINK DSR-1000n looks the part, very sold, metal case, big. rack mountable. but in no way lives up to it. It is slow, unstable and not worth the money.
I decided to go with the new CISCO E4200, it was way better. at least i didnt lose my IE connection. the through puts were still not as good as my old dlink dir-655, neither was the range. I then stumble upon the new asus rt-n56u. for £80 i didnt expect much. was i wrong? for sure! this router out perfoms anything i have ever seen. easy to setup, intuitive, you cant go wrong.
To end my rant and to sum up my router review (s).
I wanted to upgrade my dlink dir-655 because my ie downloads suffered when i was copying large files on my network.
I have 100mb cable broadband, and it seemed to decrease to about 60mb when i was copying files over the network to my nas.

I started off with the draytek 2830n cost £200
Firstly it couldnt connect to any of my dlink usb adapters using WPA 1 or 2, i had to use wep :(
The firewalll was too strong and throttled my bandwidth, i couldnt turn it off
It was tricky to setup and use.
then i exchanged it for a DLINK DSR-1000n. cost £300
bandwidth and range was good.
it was a b!t$h to set up and configure, it keep losing my reserved ips. the interface was similar to that of the dir-655 but they took away all the stuff which made it easy. why????
worst of all, i kept losing my ie connection which seemed to happen more frequently when i connected via ftp or vpn
I then exchanged it for a CISCO E4200 cost: £130
good piece of kit no faults but whilst i was playing with it i stumbled upon the new asus rt-n56u black diamond, cost: £80 Through put like i have never seen before! the signal just blasts through walls.
I am running a 10tb nas (wired) 3x wired computers. 4x wireless laptops, 4x HD media players and a wifi printer. this router handles them all with no problems. the interface is soo easy to use and graphical. It looks good and is slightly larger than both your hands.
I cannot believe that an £80 router out perfoms a business services router which cost £300. unreal
just shows that the most expensive stuff is not always the best.
do your self a favout and get one of this router. no i dont get comission, just want to save you a lot of time and research something i have wasted.
all the best
Simon
