DSTV ads sound volume

Its my own media server that i built myself, that i run the DSTV through. They wont be doing anything. Its also setup so I can watch whatever is on DSTV from any decent broadband connection

Debbie2: Well its a combined effort me and me mate have thought about it for the longest time and came to that being the only reasonable conclusion.

lol, seburn, why buy it when you can build it (and better), with almost a terrabyte of movies and series only a button touch away as well. Even got a tv card with a remote, though I tend to use the wireless keyboard more as i know how that works (still figuring out remote)

seburn, have you thought of increasing the volume to confortable level during normal broadcast? This way adverts are louder that what is comfortable, hence we are talking about louder adverts rather than softer normal broadcast. Well, if you watch TV because of the adverts, then I will understand your reasoning :D

corporations need to be held accountable, there is way to much legistation protecting them, and not enough protecting the consumer.
 
Swfish: Adverts are louder ... they attract your attention and wake you up ect ect. But this level is possibly the optimum level of broadcast and thus the other prog sound has to be decreased to make adverts louder?

It like writing different vol to cd there is a set range you can use to make the cd play back with out distortion or loss of quality, so the only way to + is to -

Well, I won't make it a problem either way, as long as the adverts volume = normal broadcast volume (on perceived level), I am happy :)

prolly sound like an uber n00b here, but, howd u do that? like, what specs and stuff? I'd dig to do that
 
just some feedback on the audio compressor setup I mentioned earier in the post.

I managed to get a manageable volume control from the compressor with a high compressor setting and uping the final volume to match.

My time was limited for testing but I did notice on Discovery that the normal programming gain reduction was -18 dB and when the ads came up the gain reduction was peaking at -28 db. This would mean some 10 dB difference in level between normal programming and ads.

We have to remember that the dB scale is a log scale and not linear.

I'm not sure how multichoice recieve their intl feed but each channel will have to have an audio limiter.

How about a limiter option in the decoder?
