anyone else noticed that the quality from channel to channel on DSTV when view via a HD LCD unit varies from good to ***?

what I meant was each channel on DSTV has differnet compression ratios, ie the visual quality suffers :)

Yes, I know. It's more obvious on an LCD screen. Try watch it on a CRT, no larger than 72cm. I have a 1920x1080i 37" TV. I know what you are talking about. The DVDs, on the other hand, look great.

I have a 37" lcd and only the SABC channels are noticeably different, DSTV looks good, DVD's looks awesome.

Yes DVD's are great :) watched Star Wars last night (again) in progresive scan mode via componenet input, what a difference.

DVD? hook up blu-ray - thats awesome! Have only got Black Hawk Down on blu-ray thusfar, but damn its impressive - will be buying some more titles asap! First on the list is Planet Earth!

DSTV has some really crappy compression on some of the channels.

... DVDs on my LCD are ok, but its only a Mecer 37", I want to get a full hd 50" LCD soon...

Definitely noticed the diff - MNet stars sucks big time - so does SET. Looking in the bedroom on a 54" CRT is fine though.

What input you using GTI?

I have a 42 inch plasma with HDMI input. I run the composite out from my old DSTV decoder into my dvd/hdd recorder (the decoder's S-video out plays only black and white, sigh). Then from the dvd recorder it outputs HDMI to my plasma. It makes a HUGE difference compared to just running the composite from the decoder straight to the tv. Anyway the only channel that has "good" (low) compression for me is Supersport 1.

I hope the likes of Telkom media and the other new kids on the block can give us better picture quality without charging an arm and a leg for it.
