DSTV App requesting irrelevant permissions

The first one is to save the Catch Up files if you choose to download it and the second is to contact support within the app.

Perhaps so, but it allows far more.

I recommend ppl always check app permissions b4 installing or using an app , however innocuous or popular the app may seem.
That way you can't cry later like currently the whole debate/fallout with FB that's ensuing..

Tell that to the 100 million people who installer Truecaller and agreed that they have the permission of everyone in their contacts list to share their detail.

The Phone permission is for when you receive a call the app can pause the video and audio.

Most ethical developers state what each permission is for on the Play Store for the app you want to download. Google should make that mandatory for all.

Thatis your choice. Find another or live with the problem or workaround.
No freebies in life unfortunately.
This is a case of Incompetence, there are other ways to handle it if a user don't want to enable those permissions, they can merely disable the features associated with that permission if the user so chooses, instead they throw this message and close the app entirely.

The first one is retarded and the second one they can merely disable.

The phone permissions is used to identify your phone because the service has a device limit
