So we just called the Cape Town DStv call centre and to our shock, after a few moments of silence, we were connected to another person's call! We could listen to the entire call, including the security verification, and could hear both the consultant and caller.

This is a massive security issue. How does it even happen?

Yeah, that is pretty bad.

Hope you made best of the situation by making some farm animal noises or similar :)

I don't believe you called a DStv call centre in Cape Town -
just a local CPT tel no that transfers you through to what I believe is the only call centre in SA, which is in Randburg.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

What's the difference???

Should be a big enough difference.
You're dialing a telephone no at a local rate if on Telkom, instead of long distance (if on Telkom). Each main city has a local tel no which transfers through to the Randburg call centre.

Calling from your landline:
Johannesburg (011) 289-2222
Pretoria (012) 422-2222
Cape Town (021) 508-2222
Durban (031) 710-2222
Port Elizabeth (041) 395-2222
Bloemfontein (051) 503-2222

Also, DStv are surely saving having everyone & everything operating from one location, instead of spread out. They do have the small regional offices for swopping out decoders etc., though.

You are now a hacker for intercepting communications which you were not authorised to.

Don't report it as you can be prosecuted, rather stick your head in the sand and forget it ever happened. That's how the law wan't us to roll in SA.
