We still have our DSTV PVR decoder as well as a normal non PVR one, replaced now with our Explora.

Do these things have a resale value? Are they still bonded to the smart card that came with them? If so, how hard is it to transfer the card (and therefore the decoder) to someone else's name?

I saw a couple of even older decoders for sale on Gumtree recently, so I guess they do have a value.

Yes they are still linked to the card and the account, so transferring them must be done either via the call center or by going to DSTv and doing it there. You would need the details of buyer and seller. How painless it is or isn't I don't know.

You can resell, yes. Quite a schlep to transfer to new owner.
Special ownership transfer docs that need to be filled in & copies of ID's etc.

Are these docs available online anywhere? I wonder why they do it that way. What do they want you to do with the decoder when they upgrade it every 6 months?

Thanks. Like selling a car almost, then

30 months ago I sold an HD PVR and another older model decoder, both boxed, with cables & PSU for R400 as a bundle. I only had them because my son enjoyed soccer and was living with me at the time, he then left for varsity.

A second-hand foot spa is worth more than these pieces of trash.

That's crazy low. What did you do about transferring ownership of the smart card?

I don't think it's low for a locked-up device that only allows me to use its hardware features (locked-in as well) if I pay the corrupt guys at DSTV monthly subs. Then there's the issues of how they corrupted Hlaudi Motsoeneng, the fact that SABC gave DSTV a monopoly on International sport, and the sale of the SABC's birthright to them for a song (remember that there are at least two parties to corruption, so if Hlaudi / SABC is corrupt, so are they).

Advertised on gumtree, only got three responses in 4 weeks.

I prepared papers for the sale and transfer (downloaded from DSTV's website), informed them of the sale and got the purchaser to sign. Then months later noticed that the purchaser didn't complete transfer, DSTV trying to bill me for his usage. Wrote an incisive communication to DSTV and have never heard from them again.

At least I have finally rid myself of the scum.:p

Goodness! Mine has been in its box for more than a year. Turns out I don't miss the sports channels as much as I thought I would (YouTube Live and other sites are fantastic).

Are these decoders recyclable?

Sold mine in May for R500 to a friend.
Still have the Explora somewhere in the house.

Love to know how many MNET analogue subscribers there are out there still today. I heard the analogue stuuf is being discontinued soon.

Good thinking, they could probably house 2 or 3 raspberry pis.
