DSTV has discontinued the Windows Desktop Player, and the functionality to download video material on Windows as of today. Browsing the DSTV website still shows download buttons but they will be gradually be removed. The only way to download videos now for offline streaming is via the mobile apps.

I used to download movies and series during unmetered times on ADSL and watch them at night. Given the screen size of pads, that doesn't seemed to be a viable option. Will have to look into Bluestacks to see if the DSTV Android app will run in that. Anyone else that's been using the Desktop Player on a regular basis?

Uhm... I was looking for the desktop player yesterday and could only find a SuperSport App for windows.

Where can I find the desktop player app that allows me to stream all other channels?

I tried BlueStacks on my laptop, I can download videos via the app, but it doesn't want to stream, just gives a black screen. Don't know if it is my hardware. Then tried my Asus pad via PC-link, but that doesn't want to work either.

Will be a DRM issue.

Got an email about this:

Dear DStv Customer

As technology evolves, the most prominent web browsers have made the decision to stop supporting Flash video plugins. In line with this global trend, we’ve made some changes to our DStv Now online service.

As you’ve used the desktop player in the last six months, you know that we’ve always offered a “download and watch later” option.

This option will still be available to you on the DStv Now app on your smartphones and tablets. As the desktop player is a flash-based service, it will be discontinued and the download option will no longer be available online.

This means that from 17 October 2016, you can stream your favourite shows from the website or the app, and use the app to manage all your downloads.

DStv Now app - take DStv with you wherever you go

Our DStv Now app offers you a range of different services – you can stream over 60 live channels including sport, download your favourite Catch Up show to watch later and even manage some aspects of your account on My DStv.

When you are on the go with your kids, we’ll help you to keep them entertained with our special DStv Kids’ section.

Great shows to catch on our DStv Now app

Missed the first episode of buddy-cop comedy / drama, Lethal Weapon? It’s still available on Catch Up on DStv Now. In fact, you can Catch Up on all the episodes that have already aired.

You’ve heard about the new HBO sci-fi series Westworld that just started airing on M-Net Edge and has received a lot of international hype. Watch episode 1 on the DStv Now app and watch it when you’re ready.

Stay in touch with the freshest shows, edge-of-your-seat sports and thrilling movies – use the TV Guide on the DStv Now app to find something to watch or even record to watch later.

Download DStv Now on the App Store or get it on Google Play.

All DStv customers can use the My DStv and TV Guide function, DStv Premium customers with an active PVR can stream Live TV, watch or download DStv Catch Up.

If you want to know more, go to DStv.com/now.

We look forward to bringing you the freshest local and international content – to watch wherever you want, when you are ready.

I'm hoping this means streaming is not using flash anymore either, which means I can stream in Chrome, on my Droid box! No more running a 20m HDMI cable cos Supersport 6 has disappeared again 5min before the F1 starts.

Well, currently it's still on Flash, and they didn't mention anything about converting the embedded player to HTML. My guess is that there underlying reasons for discontinuing the desktop app that's not mentioned
