Hi guys, seeing as I'm getting quality ROOOOOOOOOOOCK on Channel 13 on the DMX version of DSTV, I was wondering if it's possible linking the audio part of the cables to my hifi instead of having to have the TV turned on. That way I use meh radio and just chune DMX accordingly.

Will it work?

At the back of some decoders they have 'fixed' and 'variable' output.

'variable' means that the decoder mute/volume will work - and 'fixed' means you'll get a fixed output regardless of what buttons you press. Rather use 'fixed'.

I once used variable to the video machine, and some idiot pressed mute by mistake and ruined my recording!

If you've got a good ear, you may be disappointed when listening over a good hifi system. They use compression on the audio, which seems to vary over time. Some days, its near cd quality, other days it is as bad as about 40 kbps internet radio. The compression is quite audible on the classical music channels.

Crappy TV sound? I think not, I have dolby surround sound baby... but I don't want my TV turned on while I'm just listening to music. Will have a look at the ports @ the back tonight. Thanks!

I also run it through external amp. Works like a charm... Was designed to do that anyway...

My dad just got dstv. His decoder has a digital out on the back.

I assume this will be used for future 5.1 channel sound broadcasting?

In theory ... doubt they ever will though though.

Anyway, should still provide better sound that using the analogue out, depending on your amps built-in DAC and rest of your hi-fi
