So I'm finally at a point where I can downgrade my DSTV subscription...I want to move from Premium to Extra...

Now - if I do make the switch... and keep PVR, will i lose all my PVR'd content?

Also - I assume if i don't keep pvr functionality, the PVR content will probably stay, but be unaccessible.

One day I can switch completely... but need to find the F#@%$!& E!NEWS on the E! channel first!

AFAIK, the content will be available as long as you pay the extra amount per month for HD and PVR functionality

Thanks all... have downgraded. I see it now only takes effect at the next billing period.. so 1 Oct.. im on my way to freedom ;-)

From my experience when people threaten to stop paying for their DSTV premium content they are quick to downgrade but give it a few months and Multichoice has them back in the premium habit again but now those people have learned that what they have gotten used to as premium subscribers is just simply not offered by Multichoice to their other bouquets. No more channel additions, no more spoiled brat in short.

If you can be the alternative to my perception then you can count yourself as one of the very few people who can make it work. Good luck!

^^ Probably true.
I went cold turkey in Nov 2012 and disconnected Premium, 2 x HD decoders, Xtraview, blah...

Will not really cold turkey. No one in the house missed it.

DSTV Premium is worth the money in my household just for the sport. Football, F1, golf and cricket gets watched fanatically. And it's in HD.

I went dstv extra and never looked back, multichoice ur prices are ridiculous.

Yea.... I don't see us going back... But rather whittling down to nothing eventually...

There are other ways to get the content... And it's truly not that hard to get it working

Also I can write off my DSL and ISP subscriptions... I can't write off my Dstv sub

You can add rugby to that list. The other packages only have soccer and sometimes lots of it for example Extra has SS3, SS4, SS9 and SS Select (first 3 are soccer channels and the last one is mostly soccer) - not including Blitz here.

if you are not a sports junkie and also run an internet line (4meg+), you should be looking at the alternatives available.

I have MNET only for the sport and some programs like reality competition programs for my wife and daughter and I have 2Mbps uncapped internet - this works me out at R750 pm.

Now I still have my sport and the wife her reality chef and singing programs and I use the internet to get whatever I want to watch...not what DSTV decide to show or to repeat...again and again and again and again and again...oh and again. And of course...I have internet too. This all runs on to storage...so I have PVR too!

I just don't get to watch the sport in HD...but I can live with that and stick it to DSTV!!!

Works perfectly well for us :)

Sometimes people forget how poor the quality of any Internet connection can get compared to an always on television signal that just need to be decrypted by a decoder. Currently my DSTV compact subscription costs much less than my ADSL package (TI and Afrihost - 20 GB + 40 GB) and I will never disconnected my DSTV as it really is our main source of household entertainment as it's always on plus a TV set might even consume less of the electricity available in our household.

Never knew extra has the soccer...

So its been 16days without the full dstv service... And the wife doesn't miss it - AWESOME! My daughter doesn't miss it - AWESOME! And I don't miss it - AWESOME!
So I am now paying 430ish a month for the Extra package with PVR.. and I'm ok with that for now... lets see.. how things go...

:-)

It turns out the 2 channels that are left on at the moment... are CeeBees and a bit of the E-Channel, and then I watch the tv series from Plex/Roku... its a pleasure!!! No more adverts!!

So on the 31st of Dec... the wife had a couple glasses of champers and some sushi :-)
And people were chatting... and she says - we hardly watch dstv amnymore (E channel / Ceebeebee's), so I ask her - 'SO can i cancel the subscription?' And she said YES!!!

So ive downgraded to the lowest option :-) and got it in just before they closed down their site for the year (2014)

Now I'm going to move my debit order to my dad - end of Jan - and he will cancel his dstv sub, and then use my account as I get 10% discount.

Feels good to have an end in sight!
