DStv Explora 2 decoder unveiled

Yup, Multi $$$ first gotta work out the new payment structure on how to charge you more for the "privilege" of receiving 1080p

:D

Being a committed "refusenik", I have not and will not fall for all of this hype until it is absolutely unavoidable.

I am down to one 1 analogue TV in my home now. The others are all HD ready TVs, which are more than "good enough" for what we get at the moment regarding broadcast quality.

When that Analogue TV ( the main one in the lounge) fails, I will be at a cross road.

But before then, I could not care less that I can't see the mole on the leading actresses nose because I only have an HD Ready TV...

Yup, MC do not want you to make your own recordings. they only want you to consume for a limited period the junk they provide on CU and Cu Plus.

So let me get this right. They updated the explorer by cutting storage, adding a button and some lights. Wow, what a deal. Remember, not all your customers are dumb

The articles so far referred to on MyBB did not really give much technical detail but this one does.

It unfortunately does NOT mean that all channels will now suddenly be available in 1080p or that all channels will now start using the better compression technology. A migration process will start with certain channels now being transmitted in 1080p and IF MC does introduce a UHD, then the new compression technology will be used for that channel.

In the meantime, MC says it will use the new compression technology for CU plus downloads over the Internet IF you have a Explora 2A decoder.

That is the most amateur site I've seen in a very very long time, I don't consider some guy with a blogspot as credible, once we get a credible source/press release that they will in fact use HEVC I will start to be interested.

That is your choice.

MC have yet to put up anything really useful on their own website, and it appears that very little technical detail was reported on by anyone else.

However bad you think the site is, the information is correct, take it or leave it.

You may want to look at this new one posted by Jan Vermeulen, seeing you are so bent on doubting what others' are telling you ...

Dave will probably stick with his existing Explora and just get the new remote ;)

Until Monochoice send an software update for all old Explora's which will *surprize surprize!* introduce buggy behaviour on the old Explora and give MC a gap to push the new cheaper down our throats....

+1 Will probably happen just before Christmas shopping sprees start.

Best explora yet. New remote include. But wait there's more!
Limited time only, if you sign now, you also get CC TV, Parliament TV and as an added bonus ANN7 absolutely free.

The new Explora 2A ( as MC refers to the new Explora), appears to have a fairly serious manufacturing issue.

The HDD makes contact with its case, which in turn rubs against the outer box of the decoder. This cause the new decoder to become extremely noisy as the fan and HDD movement starts resonating within the decoder making the decoder become excessively noisy.

So far, all that is happening is MC is swopping out these decoders, but the chances are the swop out will develop the same problem.

A few persons have decided to open the decoder ( breaking the warranty seal) and fix the problem themselves by placing some rubberised tape and or insulation tape at strategic points inside the HDD housing.

What MC should be doing is to recall ALL the Explora 2A's and get the local manufacturer to fix the problem!

But it again points fingers to final quality control within the manufacturing environment.

Old thread, but couldn't find anything in the discussion about the "Universal Remote" feature listed..
Does this mean it's universal to all DSTV decoders only, or does it imply I can use it for my TV as well?

New remote is great and much better made then the old one. Only issue is the cost of R300 .

I can't see anything mentioned in the thread about this. The 4P decoder could record 2 and watch one. The 2P reduced this to view one and record one. Can the Explora 2 record 2 shows or only one?

Also is a new LNB absolutely required or can it make use of the old 2 cables? I know apparently you can reuse your dish if you don't want to dish out for a new one.

Explora 2 can only view one and record one. You can run the Explora off two cables but you need an Dstv smart switch then which converts the signal from the two cables to run to the Explora on one uni cable. This switch is way more expensive than the smart lnb though.
