"MultiChoice decided to leak a first look of its next DStv Explora Ultra decoder which will be white - a first-ever in this colour - together with a brand new form factor for its top-end decoder that is another radical departure from previous versions.

The 4th generation DStv Explora Ultra also has a completely redesigned remote control, likely AI voice-controlled, similar to what overseas pay-TV operators have been offering their subscribers the past few years.

Taking its design cues from Sky in the United Kingdom's "Sky Q box" decoder, the new DStv Explora Ultra box doesn't have a market release date yet although it will be rolled out to consumers within months.

MultiChoice included the first look at its latest DStv Explora Ultra decoder in its 2024/2025 half-year financial results documentation for investors. MultiChoice declined to comment on various questions TVwithThinus asked last week about this to-be-released decoder."
What are your thoughts. Will this help the already sinking DStv

What the hell is the point of another one?

The one sitting under my TV doesn't give me anything from DSTV in 4K, and my smart TV does apps way better.
They caught me for a sucker before the 2022 World Cup with all their advertising and plans to do the RWC and Olympics in 4K just for them to fail dismally.

Just another waste of money. You should be giving out these decoders for free with Premium costing so much, like routers from fibre ISPs.

You cannot be this naive, surely..

Decoders is NOT the issue people have with DStv..

Its price, content and the structuring of their packages, plain and simple..
No, I simply wanted to know what you thought. As for DStv. It really is a tough conundrum. Imagine being the CEO of DStv and having to deliver premium sport at quite a low price relative to the rest of the world because your country is not as rich as the others while also not having the market to achieve profits due to tightening consumer pockets
I feel this decoder will help catch up the technology gap between DStv and other media companies as well as possible usher in a new more price efficient Era for DStv. But only time will tell.

Not completely. For years many people have moaned about the newer decoders, apparently they aren't as sturdy and some have a problem with missing "extras" like the RF ports.

Wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, my Explora 1 was end of the line for me (have a spare).
But let's see what this one delivers..

I'm doubtful as Multichoice have mostly taken shortcuts with new tech for years, and it would have taken years to plan this new model so won't relate much to their newer survival emergencies.

That's part of my point.. This new decoder is unlikely to be any better than the existing new ones..

According to some logic on MyBB, if the decoder has a fast interface it might just save DSTV.

I might just buy one to watch it gather dust.

My Media Streaming Box, Intel NUC, 8Gb RAM, Samsung EVO 870 4Tb SSD, Formuler Universal BT Remote, Dell wireles mouse and keyboard combo.

The NUC my Son gave me, bought RAM and SSD.

The remote with silicon cover free.

The Keyboard switches between my desktop, laptop and NUC.

Runs WIN10 and Android APK's in LDPlayer 9. VPN for Peacock, iPlayer, ITVX, ALL4, MY5, and STV.

Play any local media, movies, series, HDMusic files, whatever does it all.

No DSTV, eMedia, Openview, Starsat or other decoder required.

Looking inside the current Ultra, there are perhaps R50 worth of components, excluding the 1.5Tb hard drive. Its all robot assembled so neat and tidy, but 1/8th watt SMD resistors and tiny capacitors. The switched-mode power supply runs hot all the time.

Not built for a long product life

They have used screws specially designed to be difficult to open, even worse than Apple pentalobe

The more decoders they sell, more money they make, also helps them invlate their percieved market value.

Look guys how many decoders we sold. We just not telling you how many of those burnt and died.
