I am a bit of a dstv newb (have uncapped internets)

A techologically challenged family member wants to get an explora - she currently has a normal old decoder and DSTV package.

I see it costs R99 per month for the decoder only. All we want to do is record series, is there anything else I need to know/ be aware of or do I just plug this decoder in and use it?

If it is an old single view installation you will need to upgrade the existing installation to either a unicable, twin LNB or quad LNB.

You will also pay more for the PVR access fee over and above the DSTV Premium subscription.

Yeah, go stand outside, if you see only one cable coming from the dish then you're going to have to get a twin/quad lnb and some cable. Its not that difficult to add it. Just make sure you don't move the dish itself.

It can be complicated if you have never installed one before, as it is not just a matter of putting a twin LNB on and running cable. The polarization of the LNB is critical as well.

So my bestie upgraded from PVR to Explora...I was like...does the thing come with build in VCR...the thing is big!! and not really aesthetically pleasing...IMHO...guess next version will be more compact.

It's big for the sake of heat dissipation. Or to fit in more series. One of the two.

It's smaller than the older 4p one :)
