Good morning

I know this is not the right forum to discuss this, I just want to ask do you guys think dstv explora is worth it. I'm thinking of getting it but I'm in two minds about it.

I think it's a waste of money with so many repeats and sometime the is nothing to watch. The reason I want to get it is I work three circle shifts. So sometimes I miss my soaps/telenovelas and other series I watch.

It's pretty decent, catch up etc is good(newest series sporting highlights etc )

It's on special at game store R1699 including installation. I don't want to be tied up in price lock deal.

I'm getting it on compact if I do go ahead R450 p/m or on price lock R549.

R450p/m for 12 months round up to R5400
R549p/m for 24 months round up to R13200 (price lock deal)

I have had this debate a few times with myself and with colleagues.

To me, the DSTV Premium package is still worth it. We are a family of 4 (2 kids) and we get about 10-12 hours of entertainment each per week. If I were to take the kids to the movies, bowling, putt-putt etc to get the same amount of entertainment - it would cost me a lot more than R950 per month. (Granted we still do these other forms of entertainment on occasion, but it is not 10-12 hours per week).

The wife and I have about 3-6 series we are following at any given time, added to that is the occasional movie. Kids have their shows and movies. And we watch some sports too.

As for the Explora, catch-up makes it great. Granted, you could manually set all your shows to record - it gives you the option to set it to record an entire series and you could remind yourself to record the movies you want to watch. But all this "hassle" gets eliminated with Catch Up. Catch-up is also great for when new seasons start, as you'll see the first episode in the catch-up list, where before catch-up I would only realise that a series has started again by the time the 2nd or 3rd episode is showing)

So for the once off cost of R1,500ish - I would say getting the Explora is worth it. There may be an argument for whether you get optimal use from it if you're not on the premium package.

My advice would be, get the Explora - you won't be disappointed.

(it is for the same reasons above that I do not pirate content - a lot of series are now showing the same time or a week after the US release and it is more convenient using the Explora and Catch-up than having to find some dodgy source for downloads and then you risk bad quality and incomplete content)

Does not look too bad, I am considering one myself, I am a motoring fanatic and since I work most weekends I miss my motoring shows on tv and some only repeat once a week, so I see value in getting one.

Got an sms, mine will work out at about just under a thousand rands per month, but during this tough times a R100 more is too much.

One of my colleague got it on price lock it include decor, installation, accessories fee, compact subscription and Xtra view all for R549. Not bad if you ask me but just that I don't want to be tied up in a 24 months contract.

Just look out for a special and buy it cash then.

I'm with this guy. You can also share your premium account details over 5 devices to stream all the channels for free.

Your whole post lost all credibility when you admitted to debating with yourself.

Where do you get R950pm?

I pay R980 a month but this includes 2x Decoder Care Plans for 2x exploras. I had many issues with the old 4tuner PVR and because of the care plan they replaced it recently with an Explora 2A for "free".
And just this past Monday I had to take my older Explora in for some testing and turns out my hard drive failed so I got a refurbished replacement also "free". It would have cost me R700 otherwise.
So yes, I do pay a lot but its convenient for me.

I'm torn apart don't know if I should buy it cash or take it on price lock. Cash price R1699 including installation and monthly subscription of R450. Then next year April prices goes up, price lock I'm tied up on a 24 months contract.

Price lock seem like a great deal but being in a 24 months contract, for something like dstv for me it's not ayoba.
