I haven't had DSTV in 10 years+ ... so I'm unsure of this answer :

My brother gave me an older DSTV Explorer to sell on his behalf .

Is this just like selling most electronic devices - or is there linking involved?
Marrying the Smartcard or locked to his account or something I should know?
Are they worth anything?

Some of the DSTV decoders had decent PSU's in them (3, 5, 7.5 & 12v)

Useful as a bench PSU :-)

Sold my xplora 1 and 2 for R400 each if that gives u an indication at all in dec

Ok - so it really is pretty worthless ;)

And a hassle with change of ownership ...

Well it's 5 years old the 2 was a bit of an improvement, minus the smaller HDD. They were down at R1000 when new just before they were discontinued so at most you'll get R400 if anyone wants to buy them.

Go to the DSTV websites and find the section on "Change of Ownership" If you follow that process, it is relatively painless. DSTV offices are the best to do this. Agencies vary in their knowledge of the process. At the one in PTA East, if you have all the paperwork in place, it takes about 20 minutes.

Best to do this AFTER the new buyer has been identified otherwise you just end up doing it twice.

Value? Really debatable.

Older decoders:
Prior to SD PVR --- no value at all, just sell for scrap.
SD PVR --- So crippled now because of a loss of MC support ---- only useful to an enthusiast.
HD PVR 4 tuners ---- Some demand for die-hard users who are prepared to put up with all the MC support issues. -- Basically no value. Great for use in MUD installations.
HD PVR 2P/2U --- some value for those with older installations and in MUD installations as these decoders are still compatible with MUD installations.
Explora 1 and Explora 2A ---- The last decoders with RF Modulators ---- so might have second-hand value for die-hard users of RF distribution. For those in the know, these decoders are far superior to the new Explora 3A.
