Hi, I would like to connect my one decoder(hd pvr) as an extra view onto another dstv setup(dstv explorer with extra view).

so basically we are looking at having 3 separate views running through one dish?

Is this possible and how can I go about doing this myself, I don't want to spend thousands to pay an installation company to come out and do it.

thanks in advance

You could have done this in days gone by with a SDPVR, but the latest decoders have taken a step backwards with only one view environment per box, and you can only pair two decoders in Xtraview. So it is either 2 subs, maybe have one on a lesser package, or split off your RF output to two TVs.

Thanks

so... is it maybe possible to use the view in the lounge in the bedroom too, to avoid the extra subscription?

you say that you already have extra view on your explora? what decoder do you have connected onto the Explora for extra view?

With extra view subscription you can get two viewing channels at the same time.

you cannot get three viewing channels anymore since they did away with the dual view decoders

Yep ... that is what I do. I have a few things in my lounge looped together and then the signal goes around the house.
I have a HDPVR and a SDPVR, so I have the three environments, and I change between them in the other rooms, like being in a hotel room.

PS ... do not buy an old SDPVR. DStv are about to start using upper band Ku as well as lower, which the old SDPVR decoder can not do, which is why they are offering a trade in on an old SDPVR for a Explora at a special price.

so its the old dual view decoder?

ok just googled I see that it is the old dual view decoder

:D

No, it is NOT the old dual view decoder. The old dual view decoder did not have PVR capabilities.
The SD PVR was the first decoder released by MC with PVR capabilities, which was based on the dual view decoder, offering the ability of two simultaneous viewing environments plus the ability to also simultaneously record, all independent of each other.

Not so, the SD PVR IS and has always been ( hardware wise) capable of Lo and Hi band reception. At some stage MC deliberately changed the sw on the decoder to block access to Hi-band, when they became so full of nonsense about using their decoders for FTA reception. -----

But yes no point in purchasing a second hand SD PVR, UNLESS this is to maintain the services you have on an existing SD PVR. MC have declared the SD PVR obsolete, do not provide replacement decoders anymore and do not do any sw updates unless they are forced to. The only time sw updates happens is when MC change something that affects the newer decoders which then also requires a change to the SD PVR sw.

how do you have three viewing environments with a HDPVR and SD PVR combined?
Simple, Link the decoders under XV on one subscription, combine the RF Outputs and distribute RF to as many room as you want.

HD PVR 4 tuner plus SD PVR = 3 viewing environments plus record 3.
HD PVR 2 tuner plus SD PVR = 3 viewing environments plus record 2.

Only one viewing environment is HD and only if connected to the HD PVR via HDMI. All decoders are RCA connectable and all 3 view environments are available via RCA connections.
All environments distributed via RF are in SD only.
All viewing environs are independently controllable via tvLINKs or remote blasters.

I get it now with regards to the other posters setup but trying to do it now would not be feasible as you cannot get the dual view decoders anymore and Multichoice don't support the old ones anymore.

so max of different viewing channels is two on an extra view subscription

I have an explora and an older HDPVR setup in dual view linked to three televisions and I can view two different channels at the same time and record 3 channels on those three televisions.

Guys thank you all so much for your replies...

so basically what you are telling me is that unless I get my hands on an old SDPVR the maximum "different" channels I can view on 3 tvs is just 2 channels?

Is DSTV going to be doing something about this anytime soon? I mean in my opinion, this is definitely a step backwards!

are there no other ways whereby one could have 3 different channels on one subscription?
we have 4 decoder in total, one is the Explorer, on HD PVR, on sd single(I think) view and im not sure what the 3rd one is. sorry for being such a newbie but it just doesn't make sense that in todays day and age - the only other way around this is a second subscription?

thanks again in advance.

thanks for your reply, I will find out what the other decoder is and get all my ducks in a row and then come back to you with more helpful information.

thanks again

Hi All, ok so just to give a bit more insight into my problem...

The primary Deocder is an Explorer, and the is already another HD decoder connected for the extra view(HD 4u)... I have and HD Pvr 2p or one of the older 1131 decoders which I could use too.

now, knowing that is there anyway I could have a third channel without the extra subscription?

thanks again for all your input.

The two decoders under XV give you View 2 record 3 capability. One of the viewing areas will have to share a viewing environ.

IF you add the other decoder to the mix, it will be on a separate subscription at the moment to give you the extra viewing environment.
It will NOT be coupled to the existing XV subscription, but the decoder could share any RF distribution you have in place.
