Would have thought this would have been asked before but cannot seem to find it.
What is required to go from a standard HD decoder install to a Explorer 2 install?

(1) Ask yourself why do you want to do it? If you are happy with that answer, then:
(1a) Do you live in a complex where you are required to share a communal antenna? If so find out what the BC has done about upgrading the communal antenna system before making a move. Otherwise:

(2) The minimum antenna dia required is 85 cm
(3) A new SLNB multichoice approved component. (LMX501)
(4) A competent installer with a good track record, and no, being MC accredited is not good enough -- you need some references as well.

You cannot use the existing LNB, and antenna if it is a small 60 cm antenna.

Thanks.

1) Mainly because of catchup more than anything, and decoder 40% off on ebucks.

2) house install, think current dish is 80cm

Out of interest, what does the smart LNB do differently from the 'standard' one? Does PVR use more than one cable from the LNB?

The Explora decoders (Explora 1 and the new 2A) make use of Unicable technology, requiring a single LNB input per decoder. The LNB itself is capable of receiving all VErtical and HORrizontal signals as well as lo- and hi-band.

Both cannot easily be fed with old LNBs UNLESS you invest in a Quad Universal LNB ( 4 outputs and 4 cables), plus an Explora switch version 5-2 or a 24-1Z switch. The combination of these 2 components plus the additional cable, costs more than the SLNB.

Yeah you will need a twin LNB as 2 cables in connected to the decoder. One for normally viewing and the other to record and use catch-up.

WRONG! You are out of date, that was for the HDPVR2P.

And BTW, you now need a Quad LNB to ensure that ALL transponders can be picked up from the new satellite for most older installs , especially if you have more than one decoder connected in an XV setup.

Oh my bad. Yes I've still got the HD PVR 2P decoder. I guess OP needs to confirm if he will be getting the Explora or HD PVR 2P.

But one thing is for sure, it will be more than coaxial cable

Would be the new smaller Explora. Installer previously used crappy cheapo coax cable that is already crumbling so I would need to replace it anyway, just wanted to check. And they just ran it across the roof, not secured or around the edges...

No it won't be more than one cable for one Explora decoder .....

As I stated before and repeat here:

The new Explora 2A on its own with no other decoders connected in an XV setup requires:

A new SLNB model LMX501 in an antenna ideally >85 cm in diameter, with one cable from the SLNB to the Explora decoder, because it only has one LNB input.

Got the smart LNB today so having a look how to proceed. One thing I see if I go into the help menu - gen info - tuner status, the current setup seems to fluctuate somewhat. Currently signal strength 64%, quality 99%. But earlier was strength 77%, quality 88%.
Seems a bit low even before I begin fiddling.
