OK so there's a USB port on rear of device(probably for some sort of firmware upgrade or support mechanism?), but was wondering if there was anyway to dl the recorded programs onto usb flash and then convert into a playable format?

I find it annoying that if my subscription is cancelled or inactive I have no way to play the recorded content.
 
No, the media is encrypted on the device.

Nope, even the competition would do that, it's due to them being worried about piracy.

what, ensuring you cannot access programs you've already paid for by disabling YOUR recorder? Bollocks.
