Years ago I did a self install of my SD PVR and I saved some money, not to mention the dish and the cables are exactly where I want them to be.

I am now investigating installing a HD PVR with SatCR. My reason is simple. I took a trek to my neighbour who recently had a installation done by professionals - darn, the mess of cabling that resulted from that install left me shell-shock. I then did some investigation and discovered that there is another solution SatCR.

I called a couple of installers; well some of them did not know that there were a thing such as SatCR and some even tried to convince me that it does not exist... not even pointing them to the DSTV website helped. Those that knew and offered the installation service discouraged it... either by pricing it fn high or criticizing its effectiveness.

With this behind me, I have decided to do a self install. I will keep you informed on developments.

I am leaning toward acquiring the UEC decoder; their SD PVR was a master piece for its day and age and has served me well.

H.

Getting an HD-PVR is on my horizon too and I am also planning to self-install a SATCR LNB on my dish. I currently only have a single LNB on my dish, so installing SATCR LNB should simply be a matter of removing the single LNB and replacing it with the SATCR LNB? If it is THAT simple, then I'll definately do it myself. I am also considering XtraView, so simply running a second cable with the current one should be easy as pie.

That is going to save me tons of bucks on pro installers.

Did any of the installers who discouraged the use of SATCR give you a decent explanation why you shouldn't go with SATCR? I somehow don't think so.

If you have a twin LNB just buy a Multiswitch and use that.

I did a self install on a HD PVR with the SAT Cr. It was easy, single cable to decoder (no dual view for us). I imagine that changing from a single lnb would be as simple as swapping the unit. Remember the angle though ... points down around 4.30 or 4 o'clock.

Here's a backpackers guide.

If starting from new ... set the vertical angle which is calibrated on bracket. It's around 35.5 degrees. Position the LNB in the 4 o'clock position. Wait for the morning, and using your neighbours dish, look how the shadow falls on the disk and position your's exactly the same. The disk points roughly in an easterly direction.

Tweak from there ... by scanning on your HD PVR.

You've save the installation and the cost of a signal locator.

I did my SD PVR exactly the same, with my wyfie looking at the signal quality and strength on the TV and me inching the dish into the right position.

I have just bought a silver HD PVR decoder after my small 1110 stopped working. I have a single LNB on my dish. What exactly do I need to upgrade and how much am I looking at for upgrade? Will I still pay a normal rental fee for compact or premium? I normally use compact on normal working days and upgrade to premium during holidays, like school holidays. How many channels will I view at the same time and how many to record?

SatCR will be R800 to R1000
Subscription is the same, but if you want to be able to record a 2nd channel, pause & rewind etc it will be an extra R60
View 1 & record 2, only 1 output so you cant view a recording & live TV at the same time

The guy only installed a twin LBN and 2 X 6 multiswitch and I paid R1000. Does anyone know what does the Ethernet port at the back of the silver HD PVR decoder do?

My DSTV now has no sound (it's been about 30 minutes now). My small 1110 decoder used to do that temporarily for about 2 or 3 minutes and either come back on its own or when I changed to other channels.

EDIT: Damn, I had to restart the decoder (power cord off then back on) to get the sound back.
