DStv in deep trouble

Traditional TV, including DStv’s satellite service, is on its way out, and MultiChoice has no coherent strategy to replace the billions it makes from DStv subscriptions.

Wait Amazon Prime has been in SA for years already? This article makes it sound like it's new?

They will need to shift their business model to something else
I’m pretty sure this has been thought about
In the meantime, their customer service has gone from poor to abysmal, mainly due to ill-informed staff and no support from management
There are numerous reports here detailing the shocking muddles and mess MC have made with their customers
Its high time to abandon a sinking ship

Once upon a time Kodak was the world's leading film manufacturer. Kodak is still the world's leading film manufacturer.

What many don't understand is that streaming is not big in Africa, and only finding its legs here now. For some markets.

But MC's support service is worse than terrible, that alone could do it in massively.

The problem is they want to have a premium (R1000+ pm) service. That market has access to broadband and hence streaming

Probably.
Much of the more wanted streaming content is only available here if "geo-manipulating". Will MC and their studio partners put off prosecuting for that forever? Who knows. Doing so would certainly make them more unpopular for sure.

It's always sad to hear news of people's troubles. Change is a reality of and in life, and it needs to be embraced if tomorrow has a chance of being better than today.

I'm not a movie or series watcher, and so won't personally miss that side of their bouquet. I'm also aware that there are many alternatives delivering that sort of entertainment.

What I do know is that DStv has for decades played a huge part in our country's sport, not just in ones with broad popularity and large broadcast audiences, but also in many smaller sports and games. The quality and range of DStv's sports broadcasts has been and still is outstanding, and something to be proud of - this little country delivers quality, quantity and style in sports broadcasts that are way above its weight and truly of world class.

It'd be a nett loss to our people if that service were to wind down, thin out, reduce, and decline. I for one am hoping that DStv can find a way to revivify their business and adapt to the many challenges and exigencies in a profoundly changing world, especially one that enables them to continue to fund and deliver such outstandingly good sports coverage and development.

This was posted earlier in the week re rugby coverage. Looks like the strong end of that monopoly to me...

I think the latter, just f*** off and die. Let some new entity fulfill the sport streaming role
Supersport should just offer their own streaming service. R250 a month and I'd imagine they would do well.

I'd be more than happy to pay R250 a month. I wonder out of the R1k a month subscription, what percentage is for sport alone? Basically, I wonder what the breakdown is of everything

Probably far more than 250

Totally agree. I cancelled the premium package a while back. It was either Showmax or compact for sport, went with Compact. Cheaper than premium but still a bit much as I only needed it for sport.

Now just f*** off and die already, greedy bunch of bastards!

I'd sign up for a R250pm streaming only sport package in a jiffy.
