DStv isn’t going anywhere

Randy, sadly in Africa pay-tv will dominate for some time to come. As I stated in the other article, the guys up here in Zambia all want / have DSTV with quite a number of them getting extra view or two decoders.

And why? To keep their wives and kids happy while they watch football (or just to watch football).

Perhaps as the internet grows and becomes cheaper per mb, the demand for pay-tv as the primary source of digital entertainment will drop.

BTW, I am currently in Zamiba but I have seen this in Angola and Gabon as well over the last 8 years.

and these broadcasting satellites dont need bandwidth, it works on sun shine and fairy dust.

There is opportunity for someone to offer all the services people want through a single interface with unified search and content discovery, and without having to subscribe to each service separately.

Yes but I can subscribe to each app individually if I want their content. I don't have to pay for a bunch of bundled crap I'm not even remotely interested in..
 
If they weren't worried then they would not have started to push their online solution so much.

They are worried- pretty sure of it. But, on the other hand... SA companies have this invincibility delusion of grandeur about themselves.
Their bean counters are probably identifying the risk and presenting it to them, so they worry about it for a week then forget about it because, dang, its nice to go into the office, and then leave as you wish, in your Ferrari paid for by your subs
 
The only reason why DSTV is still surviving is that the masses have their eyes firmly fixed on Barcelona, Liverpool,
and Blue Bulls.

Give these people an education if there is an HD streaming alternative and MC is fcked.

These losers still need to push their satellite tech as the norm because they know most sports junkies are clueless about streaming.

It is all about education, this forum member knows what he is talking about...
 
Dstv survives on their sport content and the fact that internet is mostly expensive and crappy in SA.
Add to that the technicalities of setting up streaming hardware and you rule out most older/non technical people.

Its been over 2 years since I last had dstv and I dont miss it at all, streaming is the only way to go.

Yeah I think DSTV is about to try and up market the fact that you can get your TV stations, Dstv on Demand, DSTV now and Showmax and probably some other crappy features all from one provider (them) compared to having to source entertainment from different suppliers for different things (netflix, sport, etc)

However I don't think they realise that the more people understand that it is quite simple to do they have no need for DSTV

At the risk of being burned to the stake, I thought he made some valid points. Streaming video is the future, but it will be a long time before the speed and data caps in Africa (where DSTV operates) make it a viable alternative to satellite TV for the majority.
