DSTV NOW as an alternative solution to satellite installation

Hello

I have been client of DSTV for years and I have been told that I need to replace my satellite dish, decoder and cabling.

Would anyone recommend that I use DSTV NOW on my Apple TV instead ?

I have a 100/20 mbits/sec uncapped fibre.

The idea of stopping relying on the satellite technology and use my Apple TV 4 instead is quite appealing.

Would I get the same channels and quality ?

Any positive experience about DSTV NOW ?

Generally, your satellite connection is much more reliable than your internet connection..

If you are going to rely just on DSTv now, you are reliant on your ISP not having any issues to maintain a connection and a good quality one at that.. You are also reliant on DSTv keeping the DSTv now platform up and running 24/7.. This platform was down over the weekend for a day or so..
 
Sports looks like crap on DSTV Now compared to satellite signal. I also looked into ditching the dish because I have to pay a MUD fee monthly as well as subscription fees.
 
Get a DNS proxy service instead, this will allow you to stream channels from most places in the world , you just need the ATV app, I stream from UK, US, Canada, Australia and NZ.
Then theres Hulu and US netflix.

Who has told you all of this? DSTV or one of their puppet installers?
Is the antenna in bad condition, rusted etc? No? ---- don't have to replace.
Is the antenna one of the older large antennas? Definitely, DO NOT replace if in good condition!

Is cabling showing signs of damage to the insulation? - Yes? Replace.
Buying a new Explora or HD decoder? Yes replace the LNB --- the older LNB is no longer suitable.
What decoder do you have at the moment?

Provide the model number and we can advise you of what you need to replace.

BTW, full access to ALL DSTV channels on DSTV NOW is not possible as all the channels are NOT available on DSTV NOW, and in any case, you still need the subscription.

Hey, I have that already for years on my Apple TV, but some lunatics in my household want DSTV

Be careful what you install.

I need to do some repairs, and I wanted to rather move viewing to Apple TV. Of course I have a DSTV suscription and I will keep it. It's just that I would like to get rid of that obsolete technology called Satellite TV.

I would not call it obsolete.. way too reliable compared to an internet connection and the end servers hosting DStv now..

Obsolete technology? That is your opinion. Is DSTV becoming a costly way to implement satellite TV? yes probably.
Broadcasting is only obsolete for those that have been fooled into spending lots of money on alternative connectivity.
 
Sorry, i am from Switzerland and we hardly see an aerial or dish in our montains. All comes from broadband, and this is going to happen here too. Even DSTV is starting to realize this.
 
Long way to go before that happens in SA and Africa. Much longer than we will be around and maybe even my kids, grandchildren and their grandchildren.
Data costs in SA are horrendously expensive even if it is available. Millions of people do not have access to connectivity let alone broadband.
 
Well how comes that since 2015, I watch my overseas TV via ADSL and the fibre here seamlessly and in HD ? Not a problem, just a bit slower on weekends (channel switching)... It is was only for me, i would throw this DSTV in the dustbin where it belongs, but me living with a SA sports freak, i have to accept the local customs : - )

It's completely viable to replace dish with data now. The only stumbling block is the quality of DSTV Now but there are other services that work well.

Like I said - DSTV Now is going to be a problem but if you're prepared to live with a buggy low quality stream then have at it.
 
if that allows me to get rid of that hideous dish, the terrible coax cables and the monster decoder with a nightmarish remote, and swich to Apple TV even for less resolution, I guess my choice is made.

You mentioned you're Swiss - why not stream from there?
