MultiChoice recently announced that it was working on 4K streaming for its DStv Now app.

“We’re continuing to develop DStv Now, with 4K streaming in testing and smart TV and Apple TV apps on their way shortly,” said MultiChoice Chief Operating Officer Mark Rayner.

Most people have 1080p TV's.
DSTV is still broadcasting 720p.
Why don't DSTV at least broadcast in 1080p?

They had an opportunity to upgrade to 1080p and they chose 720. I guess this time around they're right on point, or ahead of the curve so to speak. They'll most probably won't need to 'upgrade' for a foreseeable future; if the 4k goes well, it will future proof their infrastructure (well, until 8k is ubiquitous ).

Supersport has been producing 4K content for at least 4 years. They just haven't been broadcasting in 4K.

Look at any of the TV cameras at a rugby match. the're all 4K.

This I would like to know more of. If DSTV is still broadcasting HD in 720p then I must say the up-scaling of my TV is legendary.

1080i is still 1080 lines of vertical resolution split between two fields. Temporal resolution is affected with fast moving images, but definition is already lost to motion blur. That's not to say it's as good as a 1080p image, but it is definitely better than 720p.

Also certain channels on DSTV have higher bandwidth allocation over others. M-Net will have a higher bitrate than Fox for instance. That's why some channels have visible artifacts.
