Sigh...

So off I go looking at the various DSTV packages to see which one would suit me best.

Right, Extra or Compact look like they will serve the purpose, scroll down further, and...

:(

You only get HD if you're on Premium

I mean, really...

Not sure it's worth it - the primary sports that I watch are usually on SS3 and SS4 (cricket and soccer) so I don't really need the Premium.

Any input welcome.

By the way, what's the easiest way to lock down the channels that you don't want the kids to access?

Is there some sort of web-based interface or do you have to do it on the actual decoder?

If on the decoder, does it remember the lockdowns if you reboot/power cycle?

Unotelly and Netflix and sport are great channels on this thing called monochoice. IMHO

Thanks Wesleigh - I know about those options - I utilise Netflix - I haven't found a decent internet based sport provider that "just works"

Also, refer here to see why DSTV is on the table.

PS: Would appreciate your input on my actual queries

ie.

1. HD vs SD, and
2. Easy way to lockdown channels

You can lock channels on the decoder via the admin section. 9949 is the default pass code and then select the channels you want to lock

I downgraded to easy view.
R30 per month.

Next step is to get away from dstv.
Finally get away from Sabc.

People irritate me, when they comment about Netflix in a dstv thread... There is no way to get HD sport easier than Dstv. Period, normally I have Netflix, Hulu and dstv compact.... For this month I upgraded dstv to watch the world cup in HD. I am finding it very difficult to downgrade back to compact. As I can't see myself watching soccer in SD anymore.

As for content wise and ease of use, nothing is easier then flicking through a couple channels to find something interesting.

However I will not pay the monthly subscription so no matter what, it's back to compact from Monday. I have compact for 1 channel ss3.

Sad man monochoice.

Agreed but I just don't see myself cancelling premium. Compact would never do. Even if I could watch SD again, if a big United match was on one of the other SS channels, I'd probably be willing to pay a few hundred rands, so it's worthwhile given what we get.

I'm very happy with the dstv offering for myself and my family. Our PVR's are always running out of space. There's a lot to watch. TV series, sport, documentaries, food shows and movies.

Also in a household with multiple TV's the PVR actually trumps any media player especially in terms of ease of use and hardware cost.

I don't bother with torrents because I care about quality. Torrents are a huge pain. I also don't have uncapped because I don't download or stream. Signing up for uncapped, Netflix and a vpn will end up being more expensive than the difference between premium and compact

I'd be a much happier dstv customer if premium was around R500 pm. They'd also have a lot more premium subscribers

Those who say there's nothing to watch on dstv don't know what they're talking about and they obviously don't have a PVR because with a PVR there's plenty to watch. I love the convenience of services like Netflix but until our Internet services are more affordable, reliable and we can get streaming services like Netflix legitimately, I'll remain a dstv premium subscriber
