lol, you should have left out the XtraView cancellation .. why the reversal anyway?

Geee . . . You pay $70/month just to watch tv? And the HD is only half at 720 and not 1080. Am I right? Isn't internet tv a option? I am sure you'll get just about all the crap you get on satelitte + a extra 1000 channels for good measure :D

Try find a service on earth giving just one HD channel at 1080p for less then $70

Sorry for the late answer. In Europe (Germany) I get CBS.com streaming in 1080 - you asked for one :D Mind you, in Africa you might have problems with poor and expensive internet service (not to mention low bandwidth)

Are you sure that signal is 1080p?

And streaming? as in over the Internet, or via satellite?

How do you figure that BrendanD?

Yes we only have 1 broadcast HD signal, but it is better than a few other places..... not many I will admit.

Then again, the technology used for the HD signal is better than most developed countries who have multiple HD signals from what I know.. we are using an mpeg4 based codec whereas places like the states are still using Mpeg2 based codecs.

I have checked and your signal is 720 only! You don't have a 1080. And I don't think you'll see 1080 in Africa soon. Mind you, next year with the world cup, Africa will have 1080, albeit for a few weeks only :( I belive, in a few years from now, internet tv will take over. For that you need 'fibre to home' though. And once again, that may be a problem in some less developed countries. What I find interesting is the price you have to pay for satelitte tv. For that money, in most developed countries, one can get fibre. After that . . . nothing matters , including good old fashioned, satelitte tv :)

Gomario, i suggest you read up on what 1080i vs 1080p is. 720p is better is in most respects then 1080i, so dont just say "1080" cos that means nothing, refer to either 1080i or 1080p

720p better then 1080i ? Hmmm . . . Most modern lcd's convert the 1080i at 60fps to 1080p at 30fps. Indeed, earlier years 'i' vs. 'p' was a visual issue. Today only in slomo and on paper is still a difference :D . The displaying device virtually cancels the flicker out by combining the 2 halves. System memory is so cheap this days. Just for your info: I program avisynth (google if you don't know what it is) for years :D I don't think there are many people in here who can teach me much about video encoding, decoding, compresing, deinterlacing etc etc. For more info on hd resolution wars, do a Google for '+David +Katzmaier +1080 +720'. I hope, one day, Africa will be just as technologicaly advanced as Europe. I doubt, I will see that happened in my life time. But yes, I've been wrong before :D

Mmm, Gomario... for someone who says that there's not many people who can teach you much about video encoding, you really seem to be spectacularly mis-informed.

I'm sure you're aware that the European Broadcasting Union has recommended 720p as the superior HD broadcast format (vs 1080i). Sources are available on request, but google is your friend.

In fact, here in deep dark Africa, with our MPEG4 codecs, we have the ability to switch our broadcast on a programme by programme basis between 1080i vs 720p. Again... sources available upon request. Back here in Africa, we also recommend google.

After much research and testing in the States, both ESPN and ABC went the 720p route for their HD broadcasts. Fox Broadcasting in the States, which uses the uncontested tag-line "the Nation's finest HD standard" broadcasts in gues what... yep, good "old" 720p.

I better refrain from answering this time around. How about you enjoy your 720 and I will enjoy my 1080 and let's be 'friends across continents'. A few lines here and there - who cares -
Friendly greetings :D
