I want to self install a dish and a HDPVR to one tv.
There is talk about LNB's and splitters and other confusing stuff.

One coax cable from dish to HDPVR and HDMI to LCD TV. Is this correct?

You have a few options: (the HD-PVR needs 4 lines)

1) Dual LNB on dish: 2 lines into multiswitch splitting those 2 lines into 4 going into the PVR
2) Quad LNB on dish: lines running inside into the PVR
3) SATCR LNB on dish: 1 line going into PVR

Prices: (approx)
1) Dual LNB R150 / R200, multiswitch R400 / R500
2) Quad LNB, not too sure but think between R500 & R1000
3) SATCR, also up towards R1000

But check up on prices before trusting these

You will get an HDMI cable with the PVR so that goes direct from PVR to TV

The cheaper one seems to be the twin LNB + 4way switch. Must this switch be on the dish side or the PVR side?

Checking prices on the net:

Twin LNB -- R250.00
2 * 4 switch --- R220.00
Bare dish --- R200.00
HDPVR --- R2000.00

TOTAL R2670.00
This is without the cable.

PVR side, might be a good idea to get a 2x6 multiswitch, the extra 2 lines going out can be used to connect another PVR or 1110 (not available yet) for Xtraview

Cost & where to buy DSTV HD PVR

Hi

Marco, where did you get you prices, i cant find anything close to that. I was just quoted R3999 for the full system installed. The cheapest i can find the decoder is R2499 - in Cape town

I have a friend that used to install Sky in the UK so am hoping he will help me if i can get the bits at a reasonable price or will just get someone to do it.

Thanks
Malcolm

the twin LNB with a splitter is the best option, I am pretty sure it's a special type of cable tho and not standard coax.

my dad did his own install with an HD PVR and a SD PVR using a twin LNB and a six way splitter and he did get it to work, so its not rocket science, you also need to chat to multichoice as they need to change your sim card thing

I am in Cape Town and have an advert that says. I quote "NEW, HD PVR DECODER" R1999.00. Excluding installation.

This is with "Aerea-Sat."
Have 7 phone numbers for you for different CT areas.

Thanks Marco

I have seen the same one, was in the Rondebosch post.

It is not quite what it seems, i called them today and that price is apparently only if you use them for installation, otherwise it is R2400 over the counter. Their installation was R2100.

Give them a call, i would be interested to here what the tell you, i called N1 city.

Where would you get the other bits from?

Regards
Malcolm

They are registered even though they have a reputation for having to be called back for some channels that don't show and charging you for a call out. This happened to a friend of mine 2 weeks ago. Called their bluff.

The other goodies I got from gumtree and bidorbuy new.

Yes, the HDPVR is R1999 only if the do the full instalation for you. Inflated instalation price!!

I have decided to go the 1110 way first and wait for the HDPVR price to come down and when more HD movies are screened. Seems a waste for now but will install twin LNB and run the 2 cables to the 1110, connect one and wait.
Will the twin LNB work with the 1110?

I dont think the HDPVR price will come down, if anything it will go up in the near future

Yes, 1110 will work fine with a twin LNB

Have you checked "price check" for the HDPVR? Over R3000.00
Gumtree and Bidorbuy R3300.
Dollar will come down as it is far too high atm.

the launch price days of R2499 are over ! from 17 Nov. the new price is R3299. Anyone still selling at the launch price, is due to there old stock..

After many hours of research on the web and classifieds, I have found the cheapest installer in Cape Town.
A-Sat 021 932 0052

1110 + mild steel dish --- R899.00 installed.

I will go for this but have a twin LNB for future.

If one is installing for the very first time (not upgrading etc), I'm guessing its best to go for the quad LNB on a large fibre then? Large being 90cm?

Pulling 4 cables in is quite a problem. Twin with 2*4 splitter is easier.

Makro have the HD PVR at the launch price of R2499 (they say it is until 24/12/08)

If you can do the SatCR LNB then its infinitely better... 1 cable populates all 4 tuners on the HDPVR.
