DSTV surround sound

I recently purchased an LG 5.1 surround sound system. This week I added an HDTV and DSTV HD-PVR to the mix. It seems very little content is broadcast with surround sound audio.

One example was a sitcom playing in stereo but the ads in surround.

The sound system is receiving audio via optical cable from the TV.

Anyone with experience out there who can enlighten me on what to expect? Maybe a link where I can read more on what to expect from DSTV?

I've only picked it up on certain channels, one of them being Discovery HD, but most of the time it will display a 5.1 before the movie/series, you then have to go to Language and select Surround Sound.
