Fark that. If they think Im gonna pay extra on my current HD subscription for 3 new channels...it aint happening. Bring it on...I aint budging...

You pay extra for the HD bouquet from companies like Sky and Foxtel too. What did you guys expect?

Well they already reduced the picture quality, noticeably, on the 1 HD channel , down from 12mbits to 10mbits.

What will it be when there are 3 new HD channels? /3 ?

It is not noticable... I can't see any difference by looking at the picture.

They have a test transponder up using MPEG4 and 8PSK modulation. Should handle the HD channels at full bandwith easily.

If you convert Foxtel's premium subscription (with 5 HD channels) to rand, you get about R840.

DSTV : 80 channels with over 2.3 million subscribers
Foxtel : 150+ channels with 1.6 million subscribers

Smaller customer base but almost twice the number of channels ...

Current HD PVR = R3499-R3999
New "cheaper" HD PVR with smaller hard drive = R2000

WTF? Where do they buy hard drives from? The difference between a 80GB and a 500GB is about R250?

I never said anything about 150 channels ...... I said the conversion rate doesn't apply because the Aussies aren't paying in Rands ;)

Hopefully some competition in this market will bring prices down. I would love to cancel the dstv, but I think the missus would kill me....what with army wives, footballers wives etc.

Yes, for the bouquet. Got no problem paying for a HD bouquet should it be introduced. But the talk is mentioning a possible payment per channel. If they gonna start charging per HD channel....they can kiss my anoos!

DVDs which are SD, have about a bandwidth of about 10Mbps for a video/movie - some of the DSTV channels are compressed to 2Mbps. (P.s. these numbers might be slightly off, but you get the idea...)

Most DVDs are about 6-8 Mb/sec at VBR. Approaching 10Mb/sec leads to incompatibility issues with most DVD players - they have trouble handling the stream.

But per channel billing is what we have been asking for !
There are a whole lot of channels that we pay for that are utterly useless !

History HD? Hitler in HD? How does that look?
Anyways. Foxtel is also crap so I don't want to compare DStv to them. But look at Sky TV. 50+ HD channels! Yes, at an extra premium, but it's minimal, and it's 50 fraking HD channels! Yes, I also know they can better afford it than DStv coz of subscriber numbers, etc, but Multichoice makes one heluva profit which they can better invest in new channels. It's ridiculous.

Garbage in HD is still garbage. At least History is great in SD or HD.

LOL! Ok, no...being misunderstood here. Im saying that that if they introduce 3 new HD channels...we shouldnt have to pay for those extra 3 channels each. If they gonna start introducing more HD channels...it should be a bouquet...just like the current setup for HD is (as it basically is a bouquet as you have DSTV premium + amount for HD. Now they wanna charge for DSTV premium + for each HD channel which Im not for.)

So they either need to keep it like it is (DSTV premium + amount for HD), or like you say, do a per channel billing (which I would much more prefer...as there really is kuk on some of those channels)
