So I currently have 2 Explora decoders (1 x 1st gen as my main decoder and a Explora 2 in the bed room) connected to a smart LNB with a heartbeat cable between them. I want to add another 1st gen Explora in my lapa and was wondering about the cable setup.

Will this work?(pic found on here) https://mybroadband.co.za/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=466815&d=1506844491

Or do I need to seperate heartbeat cables?

You need a sperate heartbeat between the new decoder and the primary. Think about it, if there was no need for a heartbeat cable you could pretty much have set up the decoder in Pofadder and Multichoice would have had no idea. This is the only reason why the concept of a heartbeat exists - to check the decoders are in the same approximate location.

I would agree with you but the Smart LNB has a feature that allows the same cable to be used as LNB and heart beat (for newer decoders)

True, but they will all be connected to the same LNB.

as long as its the smart lnb

You're hjighly likely to be correct, I wouldn't know since I ditched them a few years ago :)

Yes, they are all connected to the same smart LNB. I know you can link 3 x Explora 2 decoders using unicable only, but I have 2 x ist gen Exploras and 1 x Explora 2.

I can confirm that the setup in the pic work perfectly without a hartbeat cable running from the main decoder to any of the other 2 decoders. That is my setup and it is working.

Another thing, what is the cable length limit from the LNB to the decoder? My lapa is about 25m from the LNB.

Ok I got 30m of cable and some diplexers. Will see if I can get it working on the weekend.

1unicable out from smart lnb into explora and run heartbeat cable from splitter into RF out.

NO your setup cannot be like in the picture, and that picture also does not work!

The Explora 1 cannot transmit HB via its satellite unicable port. You have to use a diplexer behind the Explora 1 to combine the HB from one of the RF ports and then feed it to any other decoders in the picture that means there should be 3 diplexers, one behind each decoder.

As already confirmed, there is a cable length restriction with Explora 1's. Many have reported great difficulty if the cable exceed 30m in length and are of different lengths. At some point MC recommended no more than 20m cables and all have to be the same length.

In a setup involving and Explora 2A, it is always better if the Explora 2A is the Primary decoder, and any others are secondary. The Explora 2A's PSU can provide up to 1A of power to the SLNB via port A, which is the port that should be used for the power feed to the SLNB.

In a combination of Explora 1's and 2A's, the Explora 1's both need diplexers at the rear to break out the HB and feed it into the Explora 1. The same applies to the HD decoders series 4. The new series 5 decoders do not need Diplexers IF the installation makes use of HB via the SLNB. IF a separate HB cable is installed, then a diplexer is required behind the 5 series decoders to combine the HB as these decoders do not have RF ports anymore.

since the new single view decoders was released if you have a smart lnb you don't need heartbeat cables cause they don't have RF in or out.
