Hey peeps.

So, I got DSTV (dual view) and I thought it would be neat to share it via my network so that I can pick it up on any PC on my network at home. So what ever the 2nd channel is on the dual view, that will stream through my network.

But, how do I go forth doing this? Anyone done this before?
I know of a uni that does it, but I lost all my contacts there as they all finished their studies :P

Please let me know what I need and what I need to do, if anyone knows ^_^
Thanks! :wtf:

If only on your pc then you may as well just get a tv card and run a coax cable.

Hey rorz0r.

I want to share it to more than one pc. So, for example: Decoder -> PC1 -> Network -> PC2, PC3, PC4 for example
Is there another route?

Cool, thanks Nod.
But now, how would I start this setup? How would I setup the connection between my PC and the DSTV decoder? Presuming that's my route.

You'll need a TV card, then use for example normal coax between the PC and DSTV. It will depend obviously what the TV card supports.

One option would be to setup a mythtv backend connected to your dstv decoder using a tv card and ir transceiver to change channels. All the other pc's on the network would only require the mythtv frontend to be installed.

This sounds like a plan. I'm going to check Nod's info as well as yours. Already started downloading MythTV.
Is there anything special I need to do to get it to work or will it be straight forward? As in "check incoming signal on this tvcard and send info to screen and network via this connection"? Then just setup the front-end to pick up the signal via the network from x ip?

In theory it should be simple but it took countless hours when I did my first setup because I didn't have any Linux experience. Make sure you get a decent TVcard, Hauppauge preferably.

All you need to get it onto the network is a video server (Sony), and a few remote extenders to change channels.

What's more challenging is doing the same thing in HD. It can be done, but you need a HDCP stripper, and it's real costly. I'll set up something like that once the bit-perfect (fully digital) strippers become commonplace (thanks to the guys who cracked the HDCP master key.:))

Just get a Dreambox decoder with an IRDETO2 cam allowing you to use the decoder with a DSTV smartcard. It runs on Linux and has an ethernet port allowing you to hook the decoder up to a network. Then you can install software (MUUTA) on the Dreambox allowing you to stream over the network allowing you to watch any channel on any PC without affecting the others. In fact you can run multiple channels simultaneously on each PC. Quite amazing.
