Why not upgrade to HD then. The additional amount for PVR and/or Xtraview is insignificant compared to the (obscene) amount you're already paying.

Its well worth it, the viewing experince in HD @1920x1080i is so much better. For example one can actually see how much more manicured Alonso's eyebrows are these days

I will try SSMax as an alternative.
Do they show the build up to the race as well on SSMax? This is something I miss as they don't show this on the normal SS channel like they use to.

Showing the famous people walk through the padock, pit girls and pre race interviews makes one feel part of the atmosphere.
With coverage starting from the formation lap you lose this.

Dunno if my TV can receive 1080 - I think it only does 720 HD and I am so broke now that even the reduced decoder price is a bridge too far.
