DStv lost 12 channels

DStv cut or lost 12 channels and only added one — exclusive to its two most expensive packages — during 2024. The most recent channel change is the termination of PBS Kids on 31 August 2024.

DStv channel adjustments are not unusual, as parent company MultiChoice regularly reviews and updates the satellite service's linear line-up.

“It follows that on the evidence before us, the balance of convenience strongly favours eMedia,” the Tribunal ruled.

“The evidence shows on one side a likelihood of damage which may be serious or irreparable, and on the other side, no likelihood of material damage.”

Sceptics of MultiChoice’s argument at the Tribunal that it wants to add channels might find it strange, considering the broadcaster has added just one channel despite making plenty of space.

So, looks like eMedia may somehow keep the eMovies etc. channels on DStv. They're good channels, but these guys are still barking up the wrong tree, there's no justification for them to get away with that without paying...

One possibility is that DStv is gearing up to upgrade some of its channels to 4K or launching standalone 4K channels, which will require lots of bandwidth.

The 4K (2160p) resolution has four times the number of pixels as a full HD (1080p) resolution.

DStv’s satellite channels are broadcast at a lower quality resolution called 1080i, a variation of full HD, or 720p HD.
Broadcasting a 4K channel takes up about eight times the capacity that these channels consume.

Multichoice were always dead set against the idea before, and putting even 1080p on satellite isn't popular worldwide. If it's not for blockbuster movies then why would they, and blockbusters are often only on Box Office now.

For sport? Nah, why - so you can see the pimple on your favourite cricket player's face?

They sure are charging as if they had it at best possible resolution.

1080p at 50FPS is very smooth, and the colors are just a bit better.

They used to comment that a higher res would be too expensive. Can't see them doing that now, not with their current mismanagement anyway, but maybe Canal+ will consider.

Multichoice group basically own the main IS20 satellite (or a large share of it), so Canal+ would be inheriting that as well. Unless Naspers held on to that part... doubtful, but I don't know.

Only 2 of them could be considered of some higher quality, and one of those went bust or something.
So looks like this wasn't a big change after all, just timing
