There have been adverts on SABC advertising DT2. Does anyone know what's it about?

DTT in South Africa

Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) refers to the broadcasting of terrestrial television in digital format.
Terrestrial broadcasting in South Africa is currently in analogue format.
South Africa is currently planning and preparing itself to migrate from analogue to digital broadcasting.

What is the difference between Terrestrial and Satellite television?

In analogue, one channel (e.g. SABC1) uses a dedicated frequency to broadcast. This is because of the large amount of bandwidth the analogue signal requires.

In digital, the signal is compressed, allowing for more channels to be broadcast in the same bandwidth as one current analogue channel uses.

What do you need to be able to receive these channels? Will a normal lcd tv suffice. I have a sony bravia

Once the DoC, Sentech, SABC & e-tv all sit down and manage to agree on the conditional access method implementation (see numerous postings elsewhere on MyBB regarding this), then you will have to get a DVB-T2 Set Top Decoder box and a compatible outside DVB-T2 capable antenna installed.

You then connect your Set Top Decoder box via HDMI or RCA connectors to your TV set to enable you to receive the DVB-T2 signals.

Some channels will be 'free-to-air' and others will require an additional subscription fee.

I'm afraid not. Only a few manufacturers (read Toshiba) imported sets that support DVB-T2. You'll need a set-top box.

Also didn't have a clue what DT2 was all about, then I found an answer on www.dt2.co.za. Thought it was another digital channel being launched.

Hi guys

As Zizo911, I also have a Sony Bravia TV. I noted my TV has an Analog AND Digital tuner built in. I just bought a new DTTV Ready TV arial, installed it, setup Analog TV in order to get the best signal (Signal 99%, Quality 100%), and then tried the Digital Auto Tuning. I couldn't find one channel. I then ran the manual tuning (which is also automatic, but you have to manually assign the results to a preset). So I found 17 channels including Supersport, Mnet, Cartoon Network etc. However, I did not find SABC or eTV. I also couldn't watch any of the channels I found. I then tried viewing Africa Magic (which I assume is FTA), but it also wouldn't work. Interesting thing, it found all of these channels under channel (frequency channel) 28 (or 530MHz). For those who don't know it, Analog TV uses dedicated frequencies for each channel, whereas Digital signals can be compressed into one frequency, hence finding 17 channels on 530MHz.

Although I have a solid signal, and I'm able to find those 17 channels, I'm not able to watch anything on Digital.

I've been playing with other settings, but nothing seems to work. I suspect it might be possible that my Bravia doesn't support DVB-T2, South Africa's chosen modulation. I'll do some reading on that.

But, my end goal is to get DTTV (or DT2) to work on my Media Center (Windows 7). Currently I have my DSTV decoder connected via a Hauppauge card via RCA jacks. The Hauppauge card also has a DVB connector, so I'm going test that next.

So, after asking oom Google, I found out my Sony Bravia KDL-40EX520 supports DVB-T (first generation) and not DVB-T2 (second generation). Ok, now off to Windows Media Center Yeay.

Ok, so I tried it on my Media Center... Apparently my HVR-1200 is ALSO only a DVB-T card.

Some money spent on the arial, cable, labour etc, but that is how you learn I guess :)

I just thought I'd give some more technical specs, since I couldn't find any technical specs specific to South Africa.

I'll be looking at some other Hauppauge card and see if I can find a DVB-T2 card. If I could get that working, it will really make my MCE an awesome piece of kit. (Keep in mind, I'll still use the RCA jacks for DSTV channels via my DSTV decoder, the DVB-T2 card will only be for SABC, eTV and some other FTA (Free To Air) channels.

Hope my post was useful to someone!

Enjoy, G

After lots of searching and research, I got hold of the cards on the following link. They appear to be the best rated (out of all the cards or USB options I looked at), and not THAT expensive, R1300+- on eBay.

I was wondering if anyone else found anything from a local supplier with similar specs. (Obviously has to be DVB-T2)

Thanks a stack!! G

Why not just wait for the release of the local DVB-T2 STBs? They should be a few hundred bucks each, at most.

EDIT: Sorry, you're obviously looking for a PC card, not an STB.
