So I recently bought a Sony Bravia BX450 (very good TV overall)

The thing that really bugs me is that i doesnt support DTS audio from a digital source (USB Drive)

1. Is this TV's Firmware update-able? (My friends samsung has this option but I dont see it on mine)

2. Will playing the audio trough a Hi-Fi that supports DTS work? Or does the TV do the decoding?

Converting does work DTS>AC3 but its a very time consuming task and i prefer the movie in its original state (untouched)

Any comments/advice are welcome.

er... The Tv won't do DTS.

AC3 soundtracks will play on a stereo setup, but a dts soundtrack needs a DTS decoder/player/AV Receiver.

FYI - DTS is a discreet multichannel sound format. Only works with a compatible DTS decoding AV receiver and a surround sound system. No TV will play DTS on it's own... unless it transcodes it down to stereo PCM

My Samsung TV supports DTS 5.1 audio. I play MKVs ripped with DTS audio on the built in media player and out through my AVR which picks it up perfectly as DTS.

90% of TV's don’t, DTS has never been a industry favorite, the actual size of the audio channels are to big, so AC3/Dolby has been the favorite the last couple of years, but since the arrival of Blu ray size isn’t a factor anymore, increasing DTS'es popularity

Remember DTS is superior to dolby, but for us normal folk, dolby digital wil be fine. (and no way you wil hear the diffrence on TV speakers, maybe on a R20000 sound system yes)

Besides that, it should not be a problem, its very scares that a movie wil only have a DTS channel, just switch to Dolby or Stereo, problem solved :-)

The "audio out" is set to go through the AVR (probably on SPDIF passthrough). A TV on it's own wouldn't play DTS.
