I have a work laptop that has all the security measures installed in it by the IT team. I need to carry this laptop with me as I am on call for some urgent issues. The restrictions make it impossible to use for general use.
I wanted to use an external drive to boot windows 10 on this laptop that I can then use for general purposes.
I opened up the laptop, removed the SSD (Just so that I dont accidentally ruin my work files), and connected a USB with win10 image and another 512 SSD through a usb drive case.
But I am getting an error "windows cannot be installed to this disk. setup doesn't support configuration of or installation to disks connected through a USB or IEEE 1394 port"

whats the best way to achieve this ?

Do the restrictions on the laptop make it impossible to install a virtual machine? If this is possible it would be more convenient.

Thats one way to go. I can do virtual machine, but I want it externally bootable for now.

Downside of Windows, it grows enormous quick, so you'll need a large external.
Does your "general purpose" require Windows specific apps? Or will it only be browser based stuff? Linux on a USB will be easier to setup than Windows 10.

Maybe insert disk into laptop, install Windows and then use it as an external.
