Tried to install both on same pc to give me a choice which to use on start up. I know it can be done but how? Do I install XP first and then Win 7 on the same HD or do I have to partition the drive.

Partition is best otherwise you'll come across issues.
It doesnt matter which you install first the second OS will just add its own entry to the boot.ini file automatically

I agree that partitioning is best, but I disagree with what version of Windows should be installed first.

The oldest version of Windows should always be installed first.

Also, Windows Vista and older (so Windows 7) does not use boot.ini anymore.

Did the partition thing, load XP first and then Win7 on the second partition. When rebooting only the Win7 option available. Thanx anyway for the info, will try again tomorrow

Quick fix would be to download/install EasyBCD 2.0.2 and iReboot 1.1.1 for easy OS switching/Rebooting.

With EasyBCD you can edit your boot menu and customise their entries. This is very helpful when you have numerous OS's installed and don't have the live CD's anymore, especially when you install a Windows over a Linux install.

EasyBCD is pretty much point and click but for a nice step-by step using have a look here.
