Before getting my Cell C stick and TP-Link router I've been using a Linksys router to connect to a friend's house across the street - 3 of us share a 384kbits ADSL line - dog slow compared to "whoosh"
Now that I've got the speedstick and TP-Link router, I'm trying to setup my home network to use the Cell C connection as primary and the "ADSL" connection as secondary or "back-up" automatically.
What I've done so far is the following:
I am connected through ethernet only to both routers through a switch in the middle. The Linksys has DHCP enabled. The TP-Link has DHCP disabled. I can access the internet on both routers depending on what I make my default gateway and preferred DNS server under TCP/IP settings for the LAN connection.
But I'm having trouble making this an "automatic" setup - i.e. my computer must first try to access the internet on the TP-Link, and if no response, then try the Linksys.
With the default gateway and DNS set to the TP-Link and the 2nd gateway and DNS set to the Linksys it works fine as long as the connection I don't want to use is unplugged from the switch. When the TP-Link is plugged in to the switch but is not "connected" to the internet (Cell C), then my computer seems to try for a long time to get a response from the TP-Link. After maybe a minute, some data eventually comes trough from the Linksys, but it is extremely slow and every new site I open either times out or is also very slow.
When I disconnect the TP-Link again after maybe 10 seconds the Linksys connection is normal (responsive) again.
Is there a setting I'm missing or is Windows too stupid to know that although the TP-Link is present it doesn't mean that it can necessarily provide internet?
