My Dual View PVR is about to give up the ghost, so off I went to investigate my options.
I have a need for dual view, and as I would like to keep up with technology when buying this type of equiment, I naturally enquired about a Dual View HD PVR. Apparently Multi No Choice are not going to introduce a Dual View HD PVR. So I can either buy a normal Dual View PVR, or I must buy 2 HD PVR's @ R4000 each. That's R8000 plus installation cost of R3000. R11000!!!!!!
This is a joke! Who can afford R11000?
And on top of this, I was informed that Multi No Choice will not allow 2 HD PVR's to be connected via Extraview. Apparently Multi No Choice don't like the fact that I will have all the options that this type of set up will offer. I did not get everything the salesman was telling me because after I heard the cost I switched off!

My vent for the day, from a frustrated South African consumer

Hi There

I don't really agree

If you want to Dual View a HD PVR you purchase a Normal decoder which costs R400.00 then enable Extra View there is not additional monthly cost for xtra view if you don't want to buy the normal decoder right now use you PVR until it dies

As far as installation goes its quite easy and you can do it yourself

buy yourself a 2 to 6 splitter box for the 2 Cables that come from your LMB on your dish plug them into the Input of the splitter box and Connect 4 of outputs into your HD PVR then plug one of them into the normal decoder you can plug the remaining 2 into your pvr if you want to.

I found splitter box at dion wired expect to pay about R400.00 for it

Once you have that done most of the hard work is over

Once you enable xtra view it gets a bit tricky to setup the I-Link and you run the risk of blowing your Second tv if you not careful so it might be worthwhile to get a pro in to do it for you or just look on the DSTV web site they have loads of info on how to set this up

The Nice thing with this setup is that the second TV will pick up the signal from Both the PVR HD and the normal decoder so you you want to watch something on the HD channel 170 or something you recorded you can watch that no problem then if you want to watch the second tv channel you just switch to the second channel you programmed on the TV that tunes into your normal decoder

Don't worry there is no signal loss through the splitter box so don't let anyone talk you into buying a 6 way LMB for R1500.00

I find this way of doing it much better that the Old dual view way

The only thing that does not work is HD to your second TV but this is obvious because your HDMI cable is plugged into TV one but even though its not HD you can still watch the HD channel on your second TV its just DVD quality not HD

Thanks
I need HD on the second TV. I have it, so I might as well use it. I also reckon that once you have seen HD you will not want to go back!

yeah

If you want that then you need 2 HD PVR's your setup will be different you will need to have one HD PVR close to TV1 and 1 HDPVR close to TV 2 then you will need 8 connections from you LMB the biggest splitter I have see is 2 into 6 any bigger they become really expensive

So you might have to put in a 4 Port LMB run 2 cables to TV 1 and 2 Cables to TV 2 and get 2x 2 into 4 Splitter box then you plug the PVR's in and away you go you can also setup extra View with them then you can watch content from either decoder from both TV's

Thats the Ultimate setup but it will cost an arm and leg

There is a cheaper HD decoder coming out next year with a smaller harddrive which will cost around R2000.00 maybe wait for that one

An its true once you have HD thats all you want to watch my HD PVR is permanently on channel 170

Cheers
