I am stopping over at Dubai Airport with two small kids for a few hours.

Is there anything to keep them occupied, e.g. playrooms, etc?
 
Giraffe restaurant has decent airport food and wifi. The airport is quite boring unless you're interested in miles and miles of watches and perfume :). Kids might enjoy riding the train between terminals.

My strategy whenever I'm there is to find a the bar that closest to my boarding gate, sit down, and drink.

I'm too hungry after not eating on the plane :p.
I'd do the same if my stopover was more than a few hours, but it sucks getting onto the next flight after too many beers then landing and having to go about my day.
You've stopped over at Singapore airport? That food court is amazing.
 
There is not really much to do at the airport except eat, drink and shop. The seating at the gates usually fill up quickly so I usually grab some coffee and a small bite, then get to the gate early-ish so I can get a nice comfortable seat. I imagine you would want to with small children. I would spend some money on some tablets for the kids and load up on plenty of games.

The whole airport is pretty neat. Their entertainment section is very cool. I usually go there to charge my phone and just hang around until my flight.

Edit: Changi also has a Nandos. Have not had a chance to test it out, but the menu looked good. Like ours but with an Asian twist.

I ate at the Nandos yesterday actually. Had the shwarma with peri wedges, lekker crispy. Its pretty much standard Nandos lol. Changi is a lekker place
 
There is a play area near Paul's restaurant but its pretty basic however there is a section where they can watch kiddie movies on replay. That is if you are flying Emirates. If you are flying another airline then you just have restaurants and shops to occupy yourself with.
 
Get a VIP Lounge access card from your bank and go sit there for free.

Just not a fan of the food - smell puts me off and it's not a problem not eating for 15 hrs or whatever. If there's a fruit option I'll take that - Emirates and Singapore airlines usually have a fruit only option which is nice getting something fresh. Fruit, beer & the snacks I've brought along :).
 
If you are with Standard Bank ... there is always the Marharba lounge .... and theres that funny Zen garden thingy, usually with people sleeping on the plastic thingys.
