Dubai -Dubai has inaugurated the world's tallest twisted tower built at a cost of $272-million, setting a yet another record for skyscrapers and other engineering marvels.

The 310-metre, 75-storey residential Cayan Tower is twisted at 90 degrees from top to bottom and was inaugurated earlier this week in Dubai Marina - a man-made canal overlooking the Gulf.

Developer Cayan Real Estate Investment and Development Company said 80 percent of its residential units have already been sold.
Construction began in 2006, but was delayed due to major technical problems and the 2009 economic downturn in Dubai triggered by the global financial crisis.

The tower was designed by Chicago-based Skidmore Owings and Merrill, the masterminds behind Burj Khalifa, which is the world's tallest tower and also in Dubai.

The 828-metre, 160-storey Burj Khalifa broke engineering and architectural records when it opened in January 2010.

In May 2012, Dubai opened the 413.4-metre Princess Tower, the world's tallest residential building, according to the Guinness World Records website.

And later in 2012, the emirate inaugurated the world's tallest hotel - the 355-metre twin tower JW Marriott Marquis Dubai.

Would absolutely love to see this in person. The Burj Dubai, was absolutely stunning, so I can only imagine what this looks like.

Indeed, not a fan of Dubai but probably worth a visit just to marvel at some of these structures.

Build a skyscraper that's so high that when you step out of your front door you're on the surface of the moon. Then I'll be impressed.

Not a fan of Dubai, but you have to respect to imagination and just the sheer beauty of some of the structures they build. There are so many, and all are stunning.

I'm Currently in Dubai, will see if I can get a shot to post here.

I am no fan of modern architecture, at least not aesthetically speaking. Give me an old building any day, like the ones in the old cities of Europe!

I'm going to dubai next week. Will check it out and upload.

When in Hong Kong earlier this year I stood next to that IFC tower and was amazed at how high it was, a full 410 odd meters. This Dubai building is almost twice as high.... can you even see the top?

What is height of the tallest building in SA?

EDIT:

1) Carlton Centre (Jhb) 223m
2) Ponte City Apartments (Jhb) 173m
3) Marble Towers (Jhb) 152m
4) Pearl Dawn (Umhlanga) 152m
5) SARB (Pretoria) 150m

Just an interesting note... if the Burj was in Cape Town it would be 100m lower than to top of Table mountain, and still lower than lions head.

I think its dramatic because Dubai is so flat. I have been up its and its truly amazing.

Im not picky, I appreciate any architecture. For example, Iv been to the Pyramids, and you have to appreciate the sheer size of the structure. And the fact that it was built by hand.

Yes, you can see the top and you can basically see that building from almost anywhere. I was lucky to go up to the viewing deck, halfway up at 452m!!! Absolutely stunning!

Fair enough, but Table Mountain is still extremely high, not compared to other mountains but still. It just amazes me that it was built from nothing.

And not a single Arab designed or built them.

This be their legacy when the last drops of the black stuff have been drained from the sands

Ozymandias
I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desart. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.
