Hi All

I am overdue for an upgrade, currently I am on an extremely expensive solution from MTN. This coupled with the fact that in my new house I have such bad signal that my phone is pointless as a phone. I am now in need of advice?

I currently have a perfectly working iphone 4 which might be out of date but I have never had an issue where I was unable to download an app due to my outdated phone. Even iOS7 will be available for me.

This being said - if I upgrade to the iphone 5 this will be the only device which has a different pin. I currently have Ipods, and Ipad and 2 iphones ( in the family ). If I go Samsung then its completely different ( this is an option but I am not a fan of the galaxy due to its size ).

I have been thinking of buying a prepaid Cell C sim and using this for the next 6 months to a year while I wait for my phone to break or better options to come out, what are your thoughts?

Can you port from MTN to Cell C prepaid, then back to a contract ( on any network ) easily ?

There is also the issue of cost, currently my need for a high end package does not exist while this may change in the future I dont see the point of paying in just to upgrade because I can....

What is everyone's thoughts?

Porting to pre-paid on CellC makes sense - as long as you have signal from them. You might be able to get a month by month contract if you are supplying your own phone.

I think there is rule which prevents you from porting more often than once every six months, which may cause a delay if you want to switch again before that.

Imo stay away from Cell C right now.

I moved to Cell c at the beginning of the year. I have never experienced such piss poor call quality as right now.

Downgrade to prepaid, use this till either the iPhone 5s comes out or your phone breaks.

At the same time try out different sim cards from other providers to see what reception is best in your area, port to the best one.

Thanks seems the advice is very similar to what I had planned. On the other networks:

My wife is on Vodacom: Pretty good coverage
I am on MTN - Piss poor coverage, I struggle to have a conversation - one good thing is that my phone bill is down due to this
Cell C - to be tested
8ta Telkom mobile - Not interested

I think I will take a 6 month use your own phone deal, on the bright side it cant be worse that what I have at moment as I have nothing.

We moved from vodascum to Cell c and are extremely happy. Could never complete a call on vodacum and always had to redial several times. Now on Cell c our reception is perfect and also much cheaper. Cost went down by about R200-R300 /month

Yea, my costs have also gone down. Drastically in fact since I CANT USE THE FSKING THING TO MAKE CALLS.

8ta uses a lot of the MTN network, Telkom told me. So another reason to give them a miss. I have had pisspoor call quality with MTN. Dropped calls galore, phone sometimes doesn't ring at my side when called. Going back to Vodacom when contract is over.

My research is that Cell C uses Vodacom's network mostly. Am I right?

Would be interesting to know if this is true, seeing that we had serious problems on Vodacom and now on Cell c our reception and call quality is perfect. Never had a dropped call in the 6 months since moving from voda to cellc.

I think Cell C uses Vodacom where it doesn't provide coverage with its own infrastructure.

I'd go prepaid and actually pay for the actual use. Keep phone till iPhone 12 comes out probably late next year.

Tried to find the source of my info but could not. I think I am wrong. I am going to give Cell C a test.

Cell C's network has 98% population coverage as of the end of 2012, the balance catered for by Vodacom data coverage. Cell C had completed its technological migration to a new sophisticated core switching network so the network can cope with any unprecedented traffic demand. Roaming agreements exist with over 550 telecommunications operators in more than 187 countries.

So can I assume that this 98% population coverage is all with their own network?
