In 2008, when I was working for the good folks at Janimation in Dallas Tx, we were hired by Gearbox to create a vertical slice (an animated version of what the game will look like) for the game "Duke Nukem Begins", a Duke origin story. I headed up this project, as the director at Janimation, and did a lot of the character development, including the design and modeling of Duke. We poured everything we had into making the most awesome cinematic Janimation had ever created. But unfortunately, we got word the game was canceled due to the legal issues with Duke Nukem at the time. "Duke Nukem Begins" was never made. It crushed us, as this was what we thought could help us compete with bigger players in the game trailer market at the time. Because it is still a piece I am damn proud of, I am releasing it 13 years after its creation. The whole team that worked with me deserves to see this released into the wild. I hope this somehow resurrects this version of the game by showing the world how awesome it would have been...

This vid reminded me a bit of Max Payne. That was way better looking as a game in pretty much every way. And that was 2001.

This just looks silly.

1. a 3rd person approach to Duke Nukem sucks.
2. The graphics sucks. A Duke Nukem city is probably the slums. Not a clean shader style.
3. He looks like a high schooler especially since he's wearing sport sunglasses instead of the wayfarer sunglasses.
4. The music selection alone in that video tells you how much they're going to miss the target. I picture Duke Nukem more of the likes of Godsmack than Rage Against the Machine.

This is gonna fail hard. And I don't believe people who actually played Duke Nukem 3D in the 90s can make these mistakes.

Problem with game trailers is they are often pre-rendered, i.e. you're not seeing actual gameplay footage. Naturally the end product often looks a little less impressive.

Might have been a good thing this was canned because that is one clunky, ugly trailer. End product would have been terrible.

When last did you see a game trailer? They kinda like showing off their engine capabilities for the last 10 years at least and the games at least looks like the trailers.

This is a game that requires 3 times the PC spec for each polygon, shader and light maps and it still looks exactly like this:

I love the Duke Nukems
My favourite is still the 1991 version, in 2D, 30 years ago when I was in the SADF
I think they called them 'platform' games back then
Just the feel, the sounds, everything back then just rocked before we used 'mice' to play games

Love it

I sucked at that one, but it is cool, in the same way as Danger Dave and Commander Keen.

If you sucked back then then you probably still suck at them; the new rage of side scrollers like blasphemous. I like them a lot but I'm not so great with them either. So most end up bought, played and shelved. haha.
