Want to have a short trip away in April with my son. Been through Dullstroom once and visited the Ale House and saw the trout farms. So thinking it may be an option.

Any advice on what to do and where to stay? Don't want to book a trout fishing day and then end up with the overly commercialised option. Much appreciated.

Stayed there in December, they have a few self catering places, we stayed in an 8 sleeper but they have smaller ones. Only about 6 chalets, and about 20 km outside of Dullstroom. Very nice.

So they don't do weddings?
The Kilbrides?

Stayed there a couple of times. It's right behind most of the pubs, so no driving around.

They have a lot of scenic hiking and MTB trails around the area if you aren't only interested in canned fishing and pub crawling (which you should save for the evenings).

Thanks for all the replies. Not really planning on hiking this trip.

So besides "canned fishing", hiking and pub crawling, is there anything else to consider (we don't have MTB's)?

Visiting the graveyard?
There's not much to do there TBH.
It's just for chilling.

What would you like to do? People usually go there to get away from the city and enjoy the relative fresh air in some relative peace and quiet (if you avoid the main street).
And Dunkeld estates rent out MTBs if you should like to do that.

We don't have our own fishing gear, wonder whether there is an option where we could use the venue's stuff.

It's a small quiet town with a drinking problem.

There's the brewery, the bird sanctuary thing, the little stalls and whatnot. If you're taking pets there's a lekker damn to take them for a walk.

There's horse riding. Lots of pubs and curio shops and whatnot to try out.

You would need to contract the places you stay to find out, some have, most don't.

Contract the shop below, they would be able to offer you the best advise on places to stay that could rent out equipment, the shop might also rent out

I have gone on a few trips to Dullstroom, only thing I ever caught was a huge hangover hahaha but that's cause I rarely make it to the water if I drank the night before.

If you go on a motorcycle, be sure to check for security. That area is a bit of a bermuda triangle regarding motorcycles.

I've visited here before, and it is heaven on earth: https://www.dunkeldestate.co.za/

Don't be put off by the luxury side ... they frequently run promos in their self-service units in an effort to get people to sign up to their units. I've done that and almost stayed for free for a week over Christmas lol, which I as an off-peak time for them ... best deal of my life.

If you like Whisky, Dullstroom has THE small place for whisky tastings, supposedly the best-stocked place in South Africa. Not really my scene but been there for a work teambuilding, was cute.
