Dumb, dumberer and dumbest

... - If they have 25% more students than last year, their overheads aren't 25% more by any means. They'll get 25% extra in fees, which are not refundable once the student is into their second semester, which is when most decide whether to drop our of continue.

You obviously do not know how these b@@@ks work. 90% do not pay any fees!!! And if you demand your outstanding fees, they thrash and destroy the campus.

Do you have any idea in the amount of admin and bureaucracy involved in implementing entrance exams at undergraduate level? Not to mention the fact that the overall majority of students drop out. either way, its going to cost tertiary instituitions a LOT of money. One of the reasons why we have high school is to weed out the non performers and identify candidates most likly to suceed. In this situation, the buck in weeding out non performers is passed on to universities.

But it is already done at Tuks. If you fail the exam they tell you that the Uni is full and you should try again the next year. They are not allowed to tell you that you are to stupid.

I've been at university for 6 years so I feel I know a fair bit about how they work. To give you an example, my mate who completed honours last year had 20c owing on his student account, and because he found this out too late, he was not allowed to graduate. He had to graduate in June this year. No jokes. If you don't pay your fees at UCT you get shut out - access to buildings and machines get taken away, you can't submit assignments.

if the education standards 'really' drop low as you guys are going onto then the universities will most probably extend the study years, offer a bridge course or whatever, they don't like dropping standards unless it means more money for them, aka accepting more students so the first years can pay their salaries.

I have to disagree. The honours LLB changed to a 4 year LLB to help a certain demographic (because apparently 5 years was too difficult).

Then have a look at the entrance requirements for the different races into certain courses like medicine.

They have been steadily dropping their standards. It is getting to the point where it really does matter which university you came from (in certain fields of study).
